Harlow has SEC on his mind
Laith Harlow grew up a Florida State fan, but over the last couple of months, the Seminoles "fell off."
With Jimbo Fisher and Co. out of the mix, at least for now, Harlow is checking out his options. The 6-foot-5, 230-pounder from Tallahassee (Godby), Fla., has plenty.
Harlow has offers from Miami, Ole Miss, Central Florida, South Florida, Notre Dame, Texas Tech, UCLA and others. The offer from the Rebels, Harlow said, meant something to him for a couple of reasons.
One, Ole Miss cornerbacks coach/recruiting coordinator Chris Vaughn is a Godby High School product who recruits much of Florida for the Rebels.
"Coach Vaughn is a friend here," Harlow said. "Everybody knows him here. He played at my school, actually. I have been in touch with him a lot."
Two, the Rebels are in the Southeastern Conference, home of the last five BCS national champions as well as three of the last four Heisman Trophy winners.
"There's one thing I need to know (about Ole Miss), and that's that it's an SEC school," Harlow said. "That's all I need to know. The SEC is tops - top coaches, top facilities, top competition, top everything."
Of course, that SEC affiliation could wind up working against the Rebels, too, especially if one of Ole Miss' SEC West rivals extends a scholarship offer to Harlow. Harlow has already visited Alabama's campus and plans to attend camp in Tuscaloosa this summer. Harlow said he doesn't have an offer from Alabama, but "I'm waiting for papers to come in. I met with Coach (Nick) Saban. I like all the coaches there."
If the Crimson Tide offers, Harlow said, they'll be "pretty tough" to beat, "but that's because I've only been to a few places and Alabama was by far the best."
