Illinois WR to check out MSU again
One of the top wide receivers in the entire Midwest for the class of 2012 is Jordan Westerkamp of Montini Catholic High School in Illinois. SpartanMag.com was able to catch up with the 6-foot-2, 190-pound standout and got some details on his recruitment and his future plans.
As SpartanMag.com has indicated in previous updates, wide receiver recruiting is very important for the Spartans this year due to the upcoming graduation of all 3 senior starters (B.J. Cunningham, Keyshawn Martin and Keith Nichol). For that reason, Head Coach Mark Dantonio and his staff are focused on several outstanding recruits for the class of 2012. Westerkamp is one of the top prospects on the board from the Spartans.
As of this update, Westerkamp holds close to 20 BCS offers, including ones from BCS powerhouse program such as Michigan State, Iowa, Nebraska and Boston College. He will certainly be one of the highest rated wide receivers in the Midwest and should get serious consideration for 4-star status when the Rivals position rankings are released later this spring.
Westerkamp visited Michigan State earlier this spring and had a lot of positives to say about his time in Spartan Country. We asked him if he has any plans to visit any other schools in the near future and if he will be back in East Lansing.
"I am heading up to Minnesota this weekend and then I am coming to Michigan State for their spring game on the 30th of April," he stated.
Westerkamp has been very proactive in his recruitment this spring. He has taken time to visit numerous schools that have offered him and he is staring to develop a good idea about which schools are his top choices. He has spent time on campus at school such as Nebraska, Northwestern, Illinois, Notre Dame and Iowa.
We asked him about his return trip to East Lansing.
"I am really looking forward to getting back to Michigan State, Westerkamp said. "They are definitely one of my top schools."
Westerkamp put up prolific numbers for Montini Catholic High School last fall while helping then win another state championship. On the season he had 89 catches for 1631-yards and 23 touchdowns. He was named 1st State All-league and 1 State All-State.
This fall he will be working hard to help his team with a third consecutive state championship. Spartanmag.com asked him if he has given any thought as to when he will make a college choice.
"I would like to make my decision before the start of my senior season," he stated. But, if I don't feel ready, I will wait until I am sure of my decision."
Part of being sure about his decision is developing rapport with the coaches at the schools he is most seriously considering. The trips to Minnesota and Michigan State over the next two weeks will go toward accomplishing that. Michigan State wide receiver Coach Terry Samuel will certainly be spending time with Westerkamp and going over how he would fit into the Spartan offense.
Michigan State's pro-style offense is an attractive option for a player like Westerkamp. The fact that he has size and speed makes him a player that can excel in pass receiving, blocking and possibly reverses and runs.
SpartanMag.com will be following up with Westerkamp after he checks out the Green and White Game.
