May 18, 2011Last year and so far this spring, Norcross (Ga.) junior receiver Jason Croom has often displayed his ability to make big plays in the passing game. In his team's recent spring game, the 6-foot-5 and 215-pound Croom did just that again and also took a shot at a new position where encountered more success.
"We just had our spring game last week," said Croom. "I had two touchdowns and it was also my first week of playing safety. It was a lot of fun and I had an interception, too. It really wasn't that difficult and I had a good time playing there."
Croom has also had an enjoyable time this spring welcoming college recruiters and garnering more scholarship offers. Previously, Croom entered the spring with offers from Mississippi State, Arkansas, Auburn, Miami and Louisville among others. But as of last week, that list has started to grow.
"I picked up offers from LSU and Tennessee recently," said Croom. "And then Monday Connecticut came by and they offered me, too. Georgia and Alabama were also at spring practice and others that have not offered yet like Ohio State, Florida State and Clemson. I did expect to get a couple of offers this year but I didn't expect all of these big offers."
Starting in the near future, Croom plans to take several trips to SEC campus and that process starts next month.
"It was good to get more SEC offers and I am happy to get every offer," Croom noted. "For sure, I am going to LSU this summer to take a tour. I am also going to Mississippi State on June 3rd with my mom. Things are going good with Mississippi State and I talked to Coach (Dan) Mullen just a couple of days ago. We were talking about our visit to Mississippi State and it was a good talk.
"I am not sure yet of all the trips yet except for Mississippi State and LSU. But I will probably also visit Auburn, Alabama and Southern Miss."
For now, Croom noted a trio of schools that are "sticking out" but has yet to name a specific leader.
"Miami, Mississippi State and Louisville are sticking out right now," said Croom. "All of those coaches are straight up with me and I can talk to them about anything. And those kind of relationships are what I am looking forward to when I get to college. I am not worried about playing time because that is up to me and how hard I work.
"I am also looking for a good education and all of those schools have good academic programs, especially Miami because they have a good field for my major, which may be communications or athletic training. But I just want to see how my visits go this summer and it will probably be the middle of my senior season before I commit."
