After committing to California sight-unseen two weeks ago, Mansfield (Tex.) linebacker Chad Whitener made his first trip to Berkeley this weekend for the Bears one-day showcase camp, and to take the full tour of the campus and facilities he'll be calling home for the next four years.
"The camp was fun, and I really enjoyed myself," Whitener said. "I talked to Jared Goff and Matt Cochran, the center. He was up there with his little brother, and I got to talk to them."
Whitener also got to come under the tutelage of his future position coach in Kenwick Thompson.
"I enjoyed it," Whitener said. "I got to spend a lot of time with him and I enjoyed it a lot."
The campus itself and the new High Performance Center not only met the 6-foot-1, 235-pounder's expectations; they exceeded them.
"It was everything and a lot more," Whitener said. "It was a lot better than I thought it would be. I've seen pictures of it and everything, and it didn't do it justice, with how much stuff there was. My favorite part was the weight room. I saw the underwater treadmill, but we didn't get to see it work."
When Whitener and his father arrived on campus Friday, they took a tour of the facilities, and then spent Saturday knocking around San Francisco. Before the camp on Sunday, they took the requisite campus tour.
The next time Whitener will be on campus will be during the weekend of the Big Game on Oct. 20.
"I'm excited for it," Whitener said. "I want to see if they can tackle my boy Stepfan [Taylor], one of my friends that went to my school who goes to Stanford."
