September 6, 2012Each week SoonerScoop.com sets out on the road to bring you the live updates from across the Big 12 region, and occasionally, the country. And though what the staff see is often surprising there is no reason for where they go to be. So take a look at this week's preview of games as Dallas, Oklahoma City, and East Texas all play host to Scoop staffers in week two of the high school football season.
The Skinny: Well obviously the conversation starts with Oklahoma quarterback commitment Cody Thomas as well as his counterpart and Texas Longhorn commitment Jerrod Heard. To see the two battle in the same city that they could be fighting it out in a couple of years is an intriguing storyline to be sure. However, it's made more interesting by Guyer's struggles last week with fellow fellow metroplex powerhouse Cedar Hill last weekend. You have to imagine the Wildcats will be looking for blood. Also worth a look tonight will be Guyer receiver, and one-time Sooner target, Ellis Jefferson.
The Skinny: Let's call this one what it is, a fact-finding expedition. Hall has another young running back in A.J. Knowles that we've heard good things about but until SCOOP HD gets focused in it's all just talk. On the other side of the ball the top-ranked Red Tornadoes are looking for their first state title in far too long and many in Western Oklahoma are raving about Garrett Lee, son of Clinton head coach Mike Lee. We'll find out what we can about both and who knows maybe a surprise will emerge?
The Skinny: And this would be the same song, second verse. However, it's been a while since the Irish produced a division one product - the last one is currently the Sooners starting center - and there is a lot of talk that quarterback/athlete Jacob Lewis could be the next in line. Again, we want to see what he is all about and will get to see him do so against a quality opponent but the early feedback on Lewis is very good.
The Skinny: There is a possibility that Alex will instead be checking out Wylie @ West Mesquite but for now we'll go with his look at Rivals100 linebacker Mike Mitchell. Every Sooner recruiting fan knows the story of Oklahoma's late entry into the Mitchell pursuit and the reality that while he wants to play linebacker some have seen the 6-foot-4, 230-pound frame as a future elite pass rusher. As a junior his athleticism jumped off on film but at times he looked a bit raw as a linebacker. Another linebacker worth watching in the game is Gilmer's talented junior Josh Walker who has a lot of potential but as of yet hasn't quite put it all together.
The Skinny: Two of the most interest Sooner targets in East Texas will hit it up on the border on Friday night as Sooners offer KD Cannon squares off with Oklahoma target Davion Hall. Cannon is the heavy favorite, early on, as Texas' top wide receiver in the 2014 class while Hall is a highly regarded receiver that many feel could have an even brighter future at safety. Both camped in Norman this summer and are expected to check out Oklahoma at some point this year. There is the potential for these two to put on a serious show on Friday.
