The 2007 Mr. Football Hot List
NMPreps was proud to give the 2006 New Mexico Mr. Football award to Artesia quarterback Landry Jones. The Mr. Football Award is given each year to the most worthy high school football player in the state for the 2007 season. The total number of nominees is yet to be decided, but we are thinking the total number is going to be around 26 total players. Today we look at the nominees for the 2007 New Mexico Mr. Football Award.
How it works:
NMPreps has unveiled the 2007 New Mexico Mr. Football Candidates list. The players are nominated based off their incoming season hype and their overall football talent. We also take into account coaches thoughts and fan's input based off the NMPreps Message Board. This works just like the Heisman Trophy award.
Throughout the season, we will look back on each week and see how each player has performed. If the player had a monster week, the player will move up on the Mr. Football ladder. If the player gets hurt or has a bad week stat wise (off the field issues count as well) the player will drop a few spots in the race for the Mr. Football Trophy.
Towards the end of the season, the NMPreps Staff will cut the list down to 8 and then down to a final 4.
This is most accurate player ranking system in New Mexico High School Football and here how it works.

Checking in with Socorro Athlete Emil Matthews
6-0, 205 pound Emil Matthews a quarterback from Socorro High school is a 2007 Mr. Football candidate. NMPreps ranked him the 18th player in the state, but Matthew's stock is certainly on the rise after two impressive weeks of football. With the Robertson Cardinals recently losing to the Lovington Wildcats, The Big Enchilada placed the (2-0) Socorro Warriors at the top of his 3A power rankings. "You guys are crazy," said Matthews laughing. "I think we are playing well right now and it is really hard to tell as we are only in week 2."
The Warriors smashed Thoreau in the season opener 42-0 and topped Ruidoso last week at home 28-21. Matthews accounted for 263 yards of total offense in the battle of the Warriors. "They (Ruidoso) jumped out ahead of us, but they helped us out as they had a few turnovers and we capitalized off that," said Matthews who is the starting quarterback and safety for Coach Ocampo.
This week the Warriors play NMMI (0-2), a team that is coming off a huge loss to 2A Dexter, but Matthews is not taking them lightly, "I know they lost big last week, but I think a few of their guys were not eligible or something and they are going to be back for this game."
The Warriors and Matthews have some tough games before district that should tell us a lot about their young team as they are home against Bloomfield and travel to rival Belen in a few weeks. Last year they spilt those games, losing to Bloomfield 14-7, but beat the Eagles of Belen for their first time in a long few years.
"Those games are going to tough games for sure. District is going to be tough as well, I was surprised by the Hatch score last week, but they are always going to be lethal," commented Matthews.
A little bit about Matthews?
What's up with the Mr. Football candidates?
Landry Jones had another big week throwing for 403 yards and four touchdown passes against the Hobbs Eagles. This week Jones and co. face a stiff defense in the (2-0) Rio Rancho Rams at home in Artesia Friday night.
James Hall is putting up some ridiculous numbers in 2007. Last week he totaled 246 yards and two touchdowns. It is safe to say the junior from Las Cruces High is straight up ballin.
Nathan Enriquez totaled 199 total yards against El Paso Montwood last Thursday night, but that was not enough to keep the Trojans winning streak alive.
Matthew Sandoval had a less impressive night stats wise and we are still waiting for him to send them in, but he should rebound this week against Carlsbad. We expect Sandoval to produce some huge numbers in week 3.
Marcus Williams, Rio Rancho High had an impressive performance Saturday night against 4A Roswell, he plays at Artesia this weekend.
Manuel Robles ran for 129 yards off 26 carries in a 24-7 over Eldorado. The Wildcats face Palo Duro, Texas this weekend. Last year they lost in an overtime thriller.
Jon Mader and the Cibola Cougars bounced the Piedra Vista Panthers, and Mader's number's were short and sweet. He was 4-6 for 60-yards and 3 total touchdowns.
Reese "Gold Shoes" Franklin's name was mentioned in almost every single play in the Hobbs/Artesia game last Friday night. He made some big plays including a huge touchdown catch in the first half.
Ruben Martinez and the Hilltoppers ran over the Horsemen and Martinez had a much better game than he did in week 1. Los Alamos is at Santa Fe High this weekend.
Alex Carson of Hatch High was 36-52 for 452 yards with 5 td passes in a stunning loss to Albuquerque Academy 48-32.
Portales quarterback Chris Mosier threw for 74 yards in week 2
Jordan Mendoza, Clovis High was 5 of 10 throwing for 53 yards in a 24-7 win over Eldorado.
A.C. Crespin had 9 tackles and 2 sacks in a big win over Roswell.
William Barr, Yanni Sutter, Gilbert Guzman and Justin Dugger. If you have seen any of these guys in action, contact us and tell us what you think!
