Wheeler exploring all options
Crockett (Texas) wide receiver Dominique Wheeler has seen his recruitment calm down somewhat recently, but the 2012 standout is aware that it's most likely just the calm before the storm.
"It's slowed down a little bit here recently and I haven't been hearing from as many programs. I'm sure that it will pick up a little more as the summer gets closer," Wheeler said. "I've been talking still with some guys from Texas Tech on Facebook. Tech is probably who I'm talking to the most right now."
Wheeler has previously attended a Texas junior day, but the timing wasn't quite right for a decision.
"I went to Texas' junior day and it was nice," he said. "I liked it, but I wasn't ready to make a decision yet. I want to make sure I give everyone a chance to kind of show me what their program is all about. So I don't know if they'll hang around or not, but I'm definitely still looking at my other options."
The 6-foot-1, 176-pounder has no other junior days scheduled right now, but he did indicate that his plans could change as soon as this weekend.
"I haven't scheduled any other junior day events yet. I'm not sure where I might be headed next, or if it will even be a junior day or just an unofficial visit. I guess that could change at any point, though. By the time the weekend gets here I might have something scheduled."
Wheeler has recently struck up a relationship with Texas Tech, most notably assistant coach Sonny Cumbie.
"Coach Cumbie seems like a cool guy. It's a new relationship right now, so we're still just getting to know each other," he said. "I just kind of started talking to Coach Cumbie, but I've been talking with some other guys associated with their program. They've made it known that they're interested in me, so I'll definitely listen to what they have to say."
Wheeler currently lists a top four of LSU, Oklahoma, Auburn, and TCU. He doesn't anticipate making a decision any time soon, but he did leave the door open for that to change.
"I don't really have a timetable in place. I really wish I did so I could have a better idea of what's ahead of me. I want to make sure I've gone through this process all the way. I don't want to leave any doors unopened," he said. "If I find a place that I feel comfortable I won't hesitate in making a decision, but right now I'm still just trying to figure out what my options are going to be."
Aside from Texas Tech, Wheeler currently holds offers from Auburn, Baylor, TCU, Texas, and Texas A&M. He's also been shown interest by LSU, Oklahoma, and SMU.
