This Eagle is Soaring

You probably wouldn't get any argument from the Baylor coaches when it came to the way DeSoto defensive back Jalen Mills performed at Sunday's camp.

The 2012 prospect went through the three-hour session with the intent of showing he can play at the BCS level. He left Waco with an offer.

Clearly, Mills was the star performer of the camp. On just about every drill between the indoor practice field and outdoor practice fields, he did exactly as he instructed. And in some cases, he did it better.

"I thought I did well, exceptionally well,'' Mills said. "When you come to a camp, you want to compete and compete hard and show people that you can play. Getting an offer from Baylor is amazing.''

Extending an offer was clearly of validation of what the Baylor coaches thought of him. He was the only player to receive an offer Sunday. Baylor's coaching staff is really focusing on finding playmaking defensive backs. The staff isn't interested in passesngers on the bus. Consider the two junior college defensive backs the program signed in K.J. Morton and Joe Williams. They are also hotly pursuing Sherman's Ryan Reid, San Antonio Brandeis' Colin Blake and
Waco's Will Hines.

Now, Mills has entered the process. In two cases, Mills dazzled in two one-on-one matchups.

In the first, he played off man coverage and then backed off a couple of steps. As the ball was delivered, he closed fast, stepped in front of the receiver and came away with the pick.

In the second, he played press coverage on a slant rout. He stayed tight on the coverage. Much like the off man coverage play, he closed fast and quickly used his swipe hand to knock the ball away.

In each case, it drew a startling reaction from everybody who watched.

"The way I play with press coverage is that I want to read their feet first,'' Mills said. "When I play offman, I want to read their hips.''

It's clear that the June camp season has summoned more interest for Mills. It should continue for the rest of this month. He said he is scheduled to go to Oklahoma State's camp later this week and then travel to Los Angeles to participate in USC's camp on June 21.
