Stewart Getting Close

The Houston Cougars have been hitting the recruiting trails hard in Louisiana through the spring and summer months, still trying to land some of the state's top talent. CougarsDen caught up with another rising Louisiana prospect that the Cougars have on their wish list.

When we last spoke to Patterson, Louisiana's Trevon Stewart, he was getting ready to set off on a camp circuit that would take him around the country to compete.

"I've been to a few camps lately, I went to camps at Clemson, Florida, Mississippi State and I just got back from a camp at Tennessee," the 5-foot-9, 195-pound athlete said. "I feel like I did great at all the camps at both cornerback and wide receiver."

Stewart has been gaining some interest from some big time programs attending several of their camps. He currently has offers from Houston, Louisiana Tech, Louisiana Lafayette, Memphis, Tulane and Southern Miss but still lists one school above all the rest.

"I love Houston, they're my top school right now," said the talented defender. "All the coaches, we talk a lot. I'm going to their camp next week and I'm ready to go down there and compete, I like Houston a lot, they just stand out to me."

Stewart is talented on both sides of the ball and could potentially play on either side or possibly both sides of the ball at the next level.

"I talk to coach (Jason) Phillips a lot," he said. "Coach Phillips wants me to play offense, but coach (Brian) Stewart wants me play defense. "Coach (Kevin) Sumlin told me I could play whichever I wanted to play and if I wanted to play both, I could come in and play both."

"I definitely can see myself playing both sides of the ball," Stewart added. "I do it a lot in 7-on-7 and I really like playing both sides of the ball, but if I had to choose, I'd probably choose offense because I think I'm better at receiver."

Last season for Patterson, Stewart totaled 110 tackles, three forced fumbles and three interceptions helping himself earn All-State honors as a defensive back in class 3A.

Stewart says he'd like to have his decision made before the end of his senior season. He'll be in Houston next weekend for a camp, don't be surprised if he pulls the trigger early if he comes away impressed yet again.

"I probably will commit if I go to camp and I just really like it, Stewart said when asked about the possibility of committing at camp. "I'm really looking forward to going to Houston and seeing everything."
