Hicks high on the Spartans

One of the top players on the recruiting board for Michigan State University for the class of 2013 is defensive back Darian Hicks of Solon High School in Ohio. SpartanMag.com has the latest on the recruitment of this outstanding prospect.

Michigan State has not offered many defensive backs for 2013, but one of the players they have is Hicks. The 6-foot-0, 170-pound prospect talked about receiving the Michigan State scholarship offer.

"Their defensive coach (Pat Narduzzi) and the head coach (Mark Dantonio) had come to our school because they were recruiting Tres Barksdale," Hicks said. "They wanted me to go down for their junior day, so I did and sat down with their defensive coach. Before I got up to leave he was saying Coach Dantonio wanted to talk with me. We talked and he offered me a scholarship."

Hicks was at Michigan State University back on February 5th when the Spartans defeated the Michigan Wolverines in basketball. He was one of only a handful of prospects the Spartans had on campus that day. The Spartans did not have an official junior day on February 5th as they are having one this coming weekend, February 25th.

SpartanMag.com spoke with Hicks about his expanding list of scholarship offers and if he has any plans for visit this coming weekend.

"I am not going anywhere this coming weekend," Hicks said. "I have 7 offers now, Michigan State, Boston College, Penn state, Illinois, West Virginia, Cincinnati and Louisville."

In addition to those schools, Hicks is hearing from the Ohio State Buckeyes and attended their junior day earlier this month.

Michigan State's success at developing All-Big Ten defensive backs is something that Hicks is well aware of. The last two years the Spartan secondary has dominated the post season honors. That fact along with competing for Big Ten championships has the Spartans very high on Hick's list.

"Yes, I like Michigan State a lot; they are definitely one of my top choices," Hicks stated. "I liked the facilities, the education and the campus. I also like the coaching staff."

What type of feedback have you received from the Spartan staff?

"The coaches there said they like my size, speed, athleticism and my cover skills," Hicks said.

Looking at the rivals.com database Hicks is the only cornerback the staff has offered for the class of 2013. As many Michigan State fans know, Mark Dantonio is very involved in defensive back recruiting due his experience at the position as both a player and position coach.

As far as his future plans, Hicks indicated that he intends on hitting several combines and camps this spring. Hicks hopes to show others what the Michigan state staff already believes, that he is one of the top defensive back recruits in the nation for the class of 2013. SpartanMag.com will be sure to keep in contact with Hicks in the coming weeks.
