D.C. DB commits to Irish

It had been rumored for a week now that this top defensive back from Washington, D.C. was all set to commit to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. However, he has now made it official and will be joining Brian Kelly and his coaches for the 2013 season hoping to compete early.

"I committed to Notre Dame," said Washington (D.C.) Gonzaga cornerback Devin Butler. "It was the best fit for me athletically, academically and spiritually. My visit there kind of sealed it for me, being around the players more and feeling comfortable there. The community, the campus, the people, the academics and football, it was all a great fit. You can say I fell in love with Notre Dame on my visit and so did my parents."

Butler, who also had offers from programs like Penn State, Michigan, Maryland, North Carolina, Iowa and many others, liked the coaches at Notre Dame as well.

"I like coach Kelly, I think he's a good coach and he will demand the best from you and that's what is needed sometimes," he said. "He won't accept failure and I like that but he's also a person you can go to and talk with. I like coach Booker, my recruiting coach, and coach Cooks who will coach me at defensive back. Coach Cooks was a big factor as well because he played at a high level at Iowa and in the NFL so he's not just some X's and O's guy, he has done it."

Butler wanted to get his decision over with early but had to push things up after his Notre Dame visit.

"There was just no waiting," he said. "There was no point. I knew I felt that comfort level I wanted. Growing up in catholic schools, Notre Dame feels a lot like home to me and reminds me of my school. You know that feeling when you get it and that's what happened to me."

Butler is ranked as the No. 24 prospect at his position in the nation. He said he is done with the process.

"I'm happy to have it over with," he said. "I'm glad I committed to a great school and I can focus on everything else now."
