Hicks is a Spartan
Michigan State picked up an important commitment for the class of 2013 this evening when cornerback prospect Darian Hicks of Solon High School made the call to become a Spartan.
"Yes, I committed to Michigan State," Hicks said when we reached him via text.
Hicks went on to tell us why Michigan State was his choice.
"Michigan State was just the right place for me" he stated. "The coaching staff, the facilities and the bond the players have with each other all just felt right so I decided to become a Spartan."
Hicks, who is rated a 3-star recruit by Rivals.com, selected the Spartans over a host of scholarship offers including Penn State, Iowa, Illinois, Purdue and West Virginia. Michigan State was one of the first teams to offer Hicks a scholarship and Defensive Coordinator Pat Narduzzi served as his primary recruiter.
Hicks has been on campus several times over the last few months, including this past weekend at the Spartan Camp. He was one of the top performers on the day before rolling an ankle and sitting out the afternoon session. Hicks did not have to compete at the camp due to having an offer, but wanted the opportunity to compete an work with the Spartan coaches.
Michigan State is very tight on scholarships for the class of 2013 and the speculation is the staff may only take 1 cornerback. For that reason the Spartan staff wanted to make sure they got the player they wanted and that was Hicks.
SpartanMag.com will have more on Hicks' commitment in the near future. Michigan State now has 7 players in the class of 2013, which as of right now is expected to be a 14-15 man class.
