Roney looking for more offers
With an offer from the University of Toledo already on the table, Detroit Catholic Central defensive end Dylan Roney is primed to receive additional scholarships and become one of the more highly recruited prospects in Michigan for the class of 2013. SpartanMag.com was able to catch up with Roney and got the latest details on his recruitment.
Michigan State will be looking to sign several defensive ends for the class of 2014 and one of the players the staff is taking a serious look at is Roney. This past fall Roney helped lead the Shamrocks all the way to Ford Field and the Division 1 State Championship game. For the second consecutive year the Shamrocks lost to Detroit Cass Tech High School.
Several colleges have been stopping into Catholic Central to learn more about Roney, SpartanMag.com spoke with him about his recruitment.
"Recruiting is going well, Roney stated. This weekend I am visiting Central Michigan and then I will be going to Toledo as well. . This spring I am visiting Northwestern and Michigan State for sure and I am sure I will visit some others. Pitt, Northwestern and Michigan State and Toledo have all been by school."
As Roney gets on campus at more schools he will likely see his offer list expand. It would not surprise SpartanMag.com if Roney picks up and additional offer this weekend when he is in Mt. Pleasant.
Having finished second in the state two consecutive years, Roney is more motivated than ever to help Catholic Central reach the ultimate goal. We asked him about what he is doing to improve his recruiting stock and his current measurable.
"I am 6-foot-3, 235-pounds now, he stated. "We have been lifting and running every day. We also have been doing speed training and I will be running track in the spring."
The Spartan staff will certainly want to have Roney on campus again this spring for either a junior day function or to see a practice. In addition, you can be sure they will want him to come up to camp this summer. If Roney does not have a Michigan State scholarship by camp, he will have a solid chance to earn one with a strong performance. This past summer class of 2013 commitment like Dylan Chmura, Dennis Finley, Trey Kilgore, Jay Harris and Demetrius Cooper all earned their Michigan State scholarships by performing in form of the staff at either the Sound Mind Sound Body Camp or at the Spartan Elite Player Camp. Roney talked about a potential Spartan scholarship offer.
"Coach Salem is my recruiter from Michigan State," he stated. "I have lots of friends that attend there as well as some friends that are already on the football team. I have always wanted to play football in the Big Ten for one of the best programs."
SpartanMag.com will continue to follow the recruitment of Roney in the coming weeks. In the past we have compared him to a Marcus Rush type of player. Keep in mind shortly after signing day of his junior year Rush held 2 scholarship offers, Indiana and Cincinnati. His offer list expanded greatly during the spring evaluation period. Roney would certainly like to see the same thing happen with his recruitment, and he is working hard to try and make that happen.
