Lezzer talks Kent State offer

From afar, Christian Lezzer has admired the Kent State program. And after his performance at the Golden Flash's Junior Day two weeks ago, that interest was reciprocated.

Lezzer received a scholarship offer from KSU linebackers coach Ben Needham, just one day after a stellar performance at the school's Junior Day. The Clearfield, Pa. outside linebacker has been impressed by the Kent State program, which cracked the Associated Press' Top-25 poll last season.

"They're a great program. I really like their coaches. Their head coach, I really like him," Lezzer said. "I like what they've done with their program. It seems like it's going in the right direction."

In addition to Kent State, Lezzer currently holds offers from Temple and Bucknell. The 6-foot-1, 216-pound linebacker says that he's received additional interest from Old Dominion, Florida International, Pittsburgh, Penn State, Maryland, Rutgers, Boston College, New Hampshire, South Florida, and Louisville, who's showed "a little interest."

Having yet to visit all of the schools that have offered him, Lezzer declined to name a favorite in the race for his services. He admitted that ideally, he'd end up at a big in-state school, such as Penn State or Pittsburgh, but should those offers never come, he could be a big get for first-year Flashes head coach Paul Haynes.

The Clearfield high school product was a first-team All-State linebacker as a junior, after leading Pennsylvania Class AAA with 12.5 sacks. On offense he had 3,107 all-purpose yards and 43 touchdowns playing quarterback, running back, wide receiver and kick returner, although most schools are recruiting him as a linebacker/safety. Kent State is recruiting Lezzer as a weak-side linebacker.

"One of my strengths would be my versatility. I think I could play a lot of positions," Lezzer said. "Obviously I'm going to have to play one position in college, but I do think I could bring some versatility. Also my quickness, and I use my hands pretty well."

Lezzer is waiting to see if any other offers come in before making a decision, but has already visited Old Dominion, Pittsburgh, and Penn State, and will visit Boston College and New Hampshire on Saturday. He also stated that an official visit to Kent State is "likely."
