Mixon Predicts Commits and Championships to Come

SAN ANTONIO - There is no denying Joe Mixon's larger than life persona. Be it on Twitter, or amongst teammates, there is rarely a moment where the 6-foot-2, 207-pound isn't in the spotlight.

However, after his commitment to Oklahoma late in the fourth quarter of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl Mixon looked as at peace as at any point in the last few months.

Because?

Mixon was spending time signing autographs for the fans in the stands in a organized autograph session that followed the game's victory celebration in lieu of dealing with the numerous interview requests that were flooding in.

"That's just the kind of kid he is," said Oakley (Calif.) Freedom head coach Kevin Hartwig of the nation's No. 9 overall prospect.

All week long Mixon had kept people in the dark on his decision with conventional wisdom siding with UCLA but when the word ran up the chain that a Cal hat was also on the announcement table it seemed as though the concern that many had had - Mixon would stay close to home - had come to fruition.

It's safe to say that Mixon, his family, and his coach did all they could to make sure the decision was secret until the last moment.

"I didn't tell anyone, I just told my mom today," Mixon said.

What about running backs coach Cale Gundy?

"I called him last night when I decided and let him know," he said.

Much as he was at home signing autographs for young fans who'd seen him take home the game's MVP award largely based on his impressive 26-yard catch and run in the first quarter. He says that feeling at home was also a huge part of his decision.

"It's a big weight off my shoulders, I basically followed where I wanted to go all along - that's where my heart was," Mixon admitted while signing autographs.

"The players, they basically treated me like I was a brother of theirs. It meant a lot and that's how I felt and that's how it went."
