Jones ready to develop offense under Heupel

Landry Jones heads into the spring with more confidence than ever after leading the Sooners to a Big 12 Championship and a Fiesta Bowl title in 2010. The junior quarterback talked about his improvements heading into the spring as well as the growth of the offense.

Do you enjoy spring football?
Yeah I do. I enjoy it.

Is it better than the alternative? Is it better than the off season conditioning?
Oh yeah. Because you're actually out there playing ball. Off season conditioning is pretty much a grind. So this is ten times better than that.

Landry, coach Bob Stoops said that this team is fairly youthful but he says that there is a sense of trust even though there are so many young guys on this team. Do you feel like since you've been here and now that you're an upper classmen. Do you feel like there's a good sense of work ethic around those young guys who are trying to become leaders?
Yeah just going off of that younger class last year getting them a lot of playing times and getting them on the field and getting them experience so that brings kind of a maturity level by them just being kind of thrown into the fire so a lot of young guys stepping up and leading and it's exciting to see them.

On dealing with high expectations and how you handle it day to day. I mean you haven't even played a game yet.
(laughing) Yeah like you said we haven't even played a game. We're not even close to playing a game so you don't really pay attention much to any kind of that kind of stuff.

But don't you feel good about this team and the chances of what could happen?
Oh yeah. I mean we definitely have a chance to be a great team but it just kind of depends on how we work and how we compete and if we're willing to just kind of go through the motions and practice or get better everyday.

How about you mechanic wise… how have you improved since we last saw you in the Fiesta Bowl?
Like I've been saying all this time just being able to play an entire year and another season under my belt just becoming mature as a quarterback. Knowing how to prepare for games, seeing defenses then the game just kind of slowing down and playing in a lot of different situations and knowing how to handle that. Just becoming like a better game ready quarterback.

With that said do you take this spring differently in the way that you things as opposed to last year?
No, I mean last year felt like I made a lot of strides knowing the offense and so I kind of just keep that same thing. It worked out great last year so why change something that worked out really good.

How did you first find out Ryan Broyles was going to come back to school?
He told me I had asked him at the end of the year and just kind of talked back and forth and he just said he wanted to come back and prove and become a better receiver.

Was that something that you talked to him a lot about and tried to persuade him one way?
No he was pretty open about it. I mean I'm not ever going try to and talk a guy into coming back or anything. He needed to what's best for him but it's nice that he came back and it's a huge target again for me and him to have another year together.

Even with him and then Kenny Stills coming back two guys that played big roles in last year's offense who are some other receivers that you've seen so far.
Justin McCay is coming along. He's a big, strong target so that's pretty exciting to see. It's going to be good when we get Dejuan Miller back. Trey Franks he's a real speedy guy and pretty physical. So we'll see how Joe Powell does this spring too.

I know we went through this during the bowl. But what's it like having your offensive coordinator sitting in your meeting room every minute of everyday.
Oh it's great you know having coach Heupel in there with us. Getting to know what exactly is gonna go in and kind of his thoughts on some plays and just things like that so that's huge for a quarterback.

Is it nicer knowing this is the guy that is going to be calling those plays when your sitting in that room?
Yeah absolutely
