Hawkins interested in Bulldogs

Two years ago Donald Hawkins was considered among the top offensive linemen prospects in the Magnolia State. After a detour to the junior college ranks, the Northwest (Miss.) Community College rising sophomore is still a wanted man in the recruiting world.

"Last year was my first year at Northwest and it was a good year," said the 6-foot-5 and 320-pound Hawkins. "I started all 10 games at left tackle and didn't allow a single sack. We went through the regular season undefeated but then lost our first playoff game.

"Going into my sophomore year, I am wanting to do even more for my team. I want to improve my run blocking and stay lower on my blocks. I am working at bending more to help me stay on my blocks longer."

So far, the former Rosa Fort (Miss.) standout has picked up offers from Mississippi State and Oklahoma State. He also noted other SEC schools are showing him some interest during his second go-around on the recruiting scene.

"I have offers from Mississippi State and Oklahoma State," said Hawkins. "My coach told me of those offers back in February. I am also getting a lot of interest from Kentucky, Ole Miss and Louisiana Tech. I have been to see Mississippi State and Ole Miss and I would like to go see Oklahoma State soon, too."

Earlier this month, Hawkins got the opportunity to catch the Bulldogs in spring practice as well as attend Super Bulldog Weekend.

"The visit was good and it was good to be back on their campus," said Hawkins. "I got to watch them practice and it was good to see that. I love the coaches at Mississippi State and it feels like home every time I go down there. Even though I wasn't eligible out of high school, their coaches still stayed on me and recruited me and just make me feel comfortable."

Hawkins noted he plans to graduate in December and said his college decision could be known around the same time.

"Going through this process a second time, it makes you think more," said Hawkins. "You also realize you should have gotten the work done the first time. But having a second chance is still wonderful to have.

"Righ now, I plan to make a decision when I go on my official visits in the fall. That way I can see more campuses and get to know the coaches better."
