San Diego Section Basketball Top 10- Jan. 19

1.) La Costa Canyon (18-2)

Led by three-star small forward Matt Shrigley, the Mavericks not only have the best player in San Diego, they also have the best team. Head coach David Cassaw's LCC squad is balanced at both ends of the hardwood, making it the team to beat in San Diego in 2012.

2.) Cathedral Catholic (18-1, 4-0)

Undefeated inside San Diego, the Dons have become masters of pulling out close games, so much so that you might call them escape artists. Cathedral has been locked into close contests with several teams inside the San Diego Basketball Top 10, but each time, the Dons tend to come out on the favorable side of the decision. Will that trend continue with upcoming games against Lincoln and St. Augustine?

3.) Hoover (18-2, 2-0)

No Angelo Chol? No problem for Hoover, which has won 18 of its first 20 games. Of those two losses, only one came against a San Diego team, and it came against No. 1 on our list. Head coach Ollie Goulston has changed the focal point of his offense this year, as Hoover now relies heavily on the playmaking ability of point guard Chris Jones.

4.) Lincoln (10-7-1, 3-0-1)

The Hornets played a brutal preseason schedule, but head coach Jason Bryant won't have it any other way. Tough losses against superior competition will pay huge dividends, and will only make uber-athletes Tyrell Robinson and Tyree Robinson better players at the end of the day.

5.) St. Augustine (16-3-1, 2-2-1)

Blowing out Army-Navy and tying Lincoln has the Saints flying high as they head into next week's critical Western League showdown at Cathedral Catholic.

6.) El Camino (13-5)

Head coach Ray Johnson has an athletic team that has size to match up with just about anybody, but the team has been a little inconsistent this year. Double-digit wins at Poway and Vista are nice, but early-season losses against Army-Navy and Morse are troubling. The Wildcats seem to have righted the ship, however, and could challenge La Costa Canyon in the Avocado West League.

7.) Poway (13-7, 1-0)

The Titans are a good all-around team, led by one of the more polished big men in Southern California. Sam Beeler isn't the strongest or most athletic post player, but he's polished enough to dominate games with his well-rounded ability.

8.) Mission Bay (11-4, 4-1)

The Buccaneers have stumbled lately after opening hot. Road losses against Mount Miguel and Cathedral Catholic were tough games, but you would've like to have seen Mission Bay pull out a win in one of those two games.

9.) Army-Navy (15-4, 2-0)

Head coach Tom Tarantino has an advantage inside every night in the paint, where 7-foot-1 center Cheikh Ndiaye roams the center of the floor. While the junior phenom has averaged a double-double this season (11.4 PPG, 11.7 RPG), he hasn't dominated the way he could, and his free throw touch is ugly at best at this point. Ndiaye needs to step his game up for Army-Navy to climb up this list.

10.) La Jolla Country Day (11-5, 1-1)

The Torreys haven't been tested too terribly inside of San Diego, but came within four points of upsetting the No. 2 team on this list. LJCD has talent, and is Army-Navy's biggest threat for a Division IV title. Junior guard Sage Burmeister (16.9 PPG, 1.9 APG) is a creative offensive player who excels at creating his own shot, but he could do a better job of setting up his teammates.

On the bubble: Vista, Westview, Torrey Pines, Mount Miguel
