Scoop HD: Sooner hoops closes a memorable Alumni Weekend
Lon Kruger could do was smile. As the clock winded down former players and coaches gathered at center court Saturday afternoon and all Oklahoma head coach
And who could blame him?
Though the Sooners second alumni weekend had come to a close a buzz had once again returned to the Lloyd Noble Center.
Even if it was for just a few hours.
"It was a really good weekend. It's such a joy to watch players come back and they had such good memories of their time here," said Kruger. "They loved being able to share those times with the fans and they appreciated their times with the fans when they were here."
Saturday's Legends Alumni Game capped a weekend of festivities in which former players and coaches were welcomed to return to Norman- some for the first time in too long to remember.
Among those to return were Mookie Blaylock and Stacey King two integral pieces of the weekend's guests of honor.
Oklahoma's 1988 national runner-up squad.
"We had all kinds of personalities," said King who now serves as a television analyst for the Chicago Bulls. "I wish we could have documented that season and had a 30-for-30 kind of thing. That was great team and a magical season and something we'll never forget."
Ironically it was Kruger's Kansas State squad that handed King and the Sooners one of their four losses during the 1988 season.
"They were outstanding with so many people that could score. You couldn't cheat in one area because other people would pick up the slack," said Kruger. "The other thing about that team was they were very, very good defensively. They scored a ton of points off their defense and getting them out in transition."
Team Cream wins Legends Alumni Game
It was a current Sooner strength and conditioning coach Jozsef Szendrei that stole the show Saturday as Team Cream outlasted Team Crimson 74-60.
Szendrei- a member of Oklahoma's 2001-2003 squads- grabbed 24 rebounds and added 14 points as the current Sooner basketball team watched on.
Kelley Newton lead Team Crimson in scoring with 21 points.
