Irish on guard with Mustipher

Notre Dame took a major step toward rebuilding its offensive line during the last recruiting cycle. The Irish took another one Monday, measured at 6-foot-4 and 286 pounds.

The Good Counsel football program in Olney, Md., announced that four-star offensive guard Sam Mustipher took himself off the market with a verbal commitment to Notre Dame. Mustipher also held offers from Ohio State, Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Michigan, Oklahoma and Stanford.

"I will be attending Notre Dame and will do my best to add all that I can to the Irish academically and athletically!" Mustipher posted on his Twitter account.

Calls to the Rivals250 prospect and nation's second-ranked offensive guard were not immediately returned.

"They're getting a really solidly built, strong guard," said mid-Atlantic regional analyst Adam Friedman. "Lots of potential, still has room to fill in his frame. He's really athletic for his size, can pull and is a really solid pass blocker."

Friedman scouted Mustipher at two games and one camp during the past year.

"He's a tough kid, has a good head on his shoulders and is a good academic student, otherwise he wouldn't be going to Notre Dame," Friedman said. "He plays in a great program where they have a lot of great coaching and he goes against a lot of great players in practice every day."

Mustipher visited Notre Dame during spring practice barely a week ago and left with the Irish a perceived leader. The Notre Dame coaching staff was confident in their position with the East Coast product coming out of that trip, the commitment likely closing out Irish recruiting on the offensive line's interior for this class.

Mustipher joins four-star offensive guard Jimmy Byrne in a recruiting class that also includes four-star defensive end Jay Hayes, three-star linebacker Greer Martini, four-star wide receiver Justin Brent and three-star defensive end Andrew Trumbetti.

Mustipher is scheduled to participate in the Rivals Camps Series presented by Under Armour in New Jersey later this month, an event that will also include Hayes and four-star tackle Quenton Nelson, who recently named the Irish his leader.

A Nelson commitment would leave the Irish with just one spot available in a projected four-man class.
