Cali. WR commits

Rancho Santa Margarita receiver Jeremy McNichols gave his verbal commitment to the coaching staff at the University of Utah Friday, becoming the 9th committed prospect for the 2014 class for Utah.

McNichols gave his commitment to offensive coordinator Dennis Erickson earlier Friday, committing to a Utah program that he hasn't even seen in person yet.

For McNichols, he felt like the timing and opportunity were the right fit for him.

"I just liked the coaching staff, they showed me a lot of love. I feel going to Utah I can find myself having the most success on the football field and in the classroom," said McNichols.

The next step for the 5-foot-10, 180-pound receiver will be to actually step foot on campus at the program he's going to spend the next 4-5 years at. McNichols said he does not know yet when that will happen, but will be actively coordinating that visit with the coaches at Utah.

The Utes are bringing McNichols in as an athlete right, but the most likely scenario for him will be based on position of need sy Utah. In high school, McNichols plays receiver and defensive back and the coaches at Utah have indicated he will fill in at whatever position he is needed.

McNichols spent his first three years of high school at Lakewood before transferring to Santa Margarita two months ago for his senior season. The reasons behind the transfer according to the senior QB are the better opportunities that exist to get ready for college.

For McNichols, making the commitment to Utah at this stage just felt right.

"I just felt like the program is going in the right direction," said McNichols. "The coaches showed me a lot of love. I felt like it would be like family there, like I'm not even leaving home."

McNichols has an extensive background in football, playing since he was in the 3rd grade. Now in his senior season, and with a commitment behind him, he plans on focusing on getting bigger, better, and ready for college football.
