In might come as a surprise, but Virginia Tech is stocking up on its quarterbacks. The Hokies got a big addition today, both in size and talent.
After being committed to Michigan State since March, Ursuline (OH) three-star quarterback Chris Durkin decommitted from the Spartans this afternoon. Hours later, he switched his pledge to Virginia Tech.
Durkin, Rivals.com's No. 15 pro-style quarterback in the country and No. 20 player in Ohio, got the offer from Hokies offensive coordinator Scot Loeffler just days ago. After a few discussions with Loeffler, Durkin said he heard all he needed to hear.
"I really like the chance to play early at Virginia Tech," Durkin said. "Point blank, that's it. It's a chance to play early with a great position coach that has a really good track record. Michigan State didn't do anything at all. At the end of the day, it's a business decision and Virginia Tech was my best bet."
Durkin, a cousin of Florida defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin, said he also heard what he needed to hear his cousin. D.J. and Loeffler coached at Florida in 2010 and remain close friends. That was a big factor, since Chris has never visited Virginia Tech. He plans on changing that Jan. 17 with an official visit.
Durkin becomes commitment No. 25 in the 2014 class for Virginia Tech. he also joins fellow three-star quarterback Andrew Ford, who committed to the Hokies in July. Durkin said he's plenty aware of Ford and is ready for the competition.
