For the longest time, it appeared Washington (Pa.) four-star running back Shai McKenzie would choose his hometown team, Pittsburgh.
But in an announcement this afternoon, McKenzie went with the next closest school. He committed to Virginia Tech and will enroll next month to participate in spring practice.
McKenzie chose the Hokies over his other three finalists, Pittsburgh, Georgia Tech and Florida State. He officially visited all four, including Virginia Tech's game against Maryland last month.
McKenzie becomes commit No. 26 for Virginia Tech and the third running back in the 2014 class, joining three-stars Marshawn Williams and D.J. Reid. Williams will enroll in school next month and participate in the Hokies' spring practice.
This fall, McKenzie entered the season with a chance to set the state record for career rushing yardage. But in his third game, he tore his ACL and missed the rest of the season. Because the injury occurred early in the season, McKenzie is expected to make a full recovery in time for his freshman season of college.
In those first three games, he rushed for 650 yards and 11 touchdowns on just 36 carries (more than 18 yards per carry). As a junior in 2012, McKenzie ran for 2,689 yards and 41 touchdowns and earned Pennsylvania Class AA all-state honors. He finished his career with 4,856 rushing yards.
