Kelly: 'Get Your Diploma and Go'?

For all of Oklahoma's recruiting successes through the Bob Stoops era few players were a bigger coup for the Sooners than Fresno (Calif.) Clovis West five-star linebacker Caleb Kelly.

A late night National Signing Day announcement full of internal debate over the last week brought to close a recruitment that was nearly two years in the making. That two-year pursuit came after the 6-foot-3, 214-pound Kelly was offered by Mike Stoops in April of his sophomore year. After it all came to a close SoonerScoop.com spoke with Kelly as he traveled cross country with his mother before reporting to Norman.

After months and months of everyone watching his every move it's clear Kelly enjoyed the final four months of his time in Fresno.

"After signing day my phone was shut down. After that, the whole next morning I had P.E., we were seniors so we didn’t really do anything. I had to text like 84 people back with ‘thank you’, that was my whole P.E. period just texting people back," Kelly admitted. "After that my Twitter blew up, I couldn’t get on Twitter, it kept on going back to the home screen. I actually heard that I was trending but I don't know.

"(Prior to leaving) I did a lot, I went to the beach, went to the amusement park in Los Angeles, I went and ate at Doghouse grill, that place is bomb. I hung out with pretty much all of my best, best friends. Hung out with the family, went to a lot of family dinners. I wanted to take some pictures with my girlfriend [in the final days before leaving], but my mom wasn’t having it – I had to spend some more time with my family."

As the nation's No. 14 overall player it's safe to say the scrutiny over his recruitment was, at times, uncomfortable. However, as signing day came and went he was able to get back to the normalcy of life and to the pleasure of his family, and Oklahoma's admissions department, put together a strong academic resume.

"I got the 3.5 finished out with it, I was just chilling," he explained. "Also, I got my workouts in, got up to 235-pound but felt a little heavy and asked if the coaches I could stay at 230 for a bit.

"I’ve just been working out, I went through 12 weeks and I took a few weeks off after that ended (and before I reported)."

But with all of this going to plan it's only fair that things went a bit crazy over the last few days of Kelly's time in Fresno.

"It’s been to the plan pretty much. We had graduation night on Thursday through Friday so I didn’t sleep on Thursday night, I slept until two because I hadn’t slept yet. When I woke up my mom was like ‘your turn to drive’," he said.

"It took so long because we had graduation and then we had silver graduation, which is after graduation, We went to Incredible Pizza then we were hanging out there and that ended at like 3, I didn’t win anything but that’s ok.

"From there I was just saying goodbye to everyone from like 3 to 4:30 I was saying goodbye to everyone. My mom and I went and switched cars with my grandma, because that is what we are driving in. We went home to get our stuff, my girlfriend woke up and then my mom woke up and we started packing the car and we rolled out.

"We went over to a bagel place and said goodbye to some more people from there, we had told people to meet there."

Kelly, who is rooming with fellow Californian Jordan Parker, says that in spite of all of the enjoyment of his final months in California there was one current Sooner staffer who made it clear where he felt Kelly should be.
