Jackson had success early, but will leave OU

Sophomore-to-be wide receiver Kameel Jackson is transferring from Oklahoma. Jackson confirmed to SoonerScoop.com this evening he is leaving Norman and will transfer to Texas A&M to play for former OU co-offensive coordinator Kevin Sumlin.

"The rumors are true about me transferring," Jackson said through text message. "I have my mind made up."

But last night a source tells us Jackson hasn't asked for permission from Texas A&M to transfer to College Station.

That source tells us A&M, and even head coach Kevin Sumlin, was unaware Jackson was interested in transferring to A&M as of last night.

That same source also said A&M would not be interested in bringing in Jackson as a transfer because of their current situation at the wide receiver position.

Jackson played in 11 games last season as a true freshmen and started late in the season against Baylor and during OU's bowl game against Iowa after the Sooners lost Ryan Broyles to a season-ending knee injury. Jackson caught 12 passes for 165 yards for a 13.8 yard per reception average.

He was expected to be in the driver's seat for a starting position in 2012 until freshmen sensation Trey Metoyer became the star of spring football practices.

Jackson did not play in Oklahoma's final spring football scrimmage, the Red & White Game, and rumors started to surface that the 6-foot, 195-pound wideout from Arlington (TX) Sam Houston High School was unhappy in Norman.

Those rumors finally came true when Jackson confirmed he was leaving the OU program.

"I must say though, I enjoyed my time at OU, and will always root for them," said Jackson.

Another source confirmed to SoonerScoop.com Jackson has not filed the necessary paperwork needed in order to facilitate a transfer from Oklahoma to Texas A&M - and confirmed A&M is not involved at all in this process from an administrative standpoint.

After talking to several people on both sides of the issue, it appears Jackson had spoken to members of the Texas A&M team about transferring, but never actually talked to the Texas A&M administration or A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin about the viability of a transfer to the Aggies.

Other sources indicate even though Jackson won't end up at Texas A&M, he may be facing too many off the field issues to remain in Norman.

Jackson has been unhappy at Oklahoma and sources say he had major class and attendance issues this past spring. SoonerScoop.com was told Jackson could be facing disciplinary issues due to those issues which could include a 2012 suspension due to academic and spring practice absences.

The Sooners won't spend too much time lamenting the loss of Jackson, if he follows through with a transfer. Wide receivers coach Jay Norvell brings in the Rivals.com's top receiving class next fall. If Metoyer's spring was any indication, the Sooners will find receivers for senior quarterback Landry Jones in this incoming crop of pass catchers.

SoonerScoop.com reported last Friday Courtney Gardner, another jewel of OU's highly rated class, will spend his summer in California finishing up his junior college coursework. He'll have to take at least one class this summer in order to graduate and arrive in Norman before the start of fall camp.

The Sooners will welcome in highly touted local product Sterling Shepard as well as U.S. Army All-Americans Durron Neal and Derrick Woods.

If anything, Jackson's likely departure serves notice Metoyer will need to be an even bigger part of OU's offense in 2012, and that the Sooners need receivers as much as they did on national signing day last February.

But for Jackson, his OU career is likely done while his Texas A&M career never really started.
