Stoops talks scrimmage, Ronnell, All-Access

Bob Stoops met with the media on Thursday following the Sooners' second major scrimmage of fall camp. The Sooners wrap up two-a-days practices today in Norman before heading into game week preparations and the start of classes on Monday.

Bob Stoops talked about the scrimmage and was asked to address Ronnell Lewis' situation as well as the status of incoming freshmen Trey Metoyer.

More good and bad at today's scrimmage?

Oh it was good, both sides had their times. It was positive. I think the last one we had 110 plays. This one we had around 100. It was a good.

Two scrimmages in, what do you like about your running backs, what's standing out to you?

One, they're taking care of the football, that's the biggest thing. There are very few balls on the ground and they're creating some good plays. They're making, I feel like we're blocking and targeting people better and getting bodies on bodies and they're doing a nice job with finding the seams and making some plays.

Did they play pretty well today?

They did. They did.

Bob when you see the stuff going on at Miami, is that just the nightmare scenario for any coach?

Sure. Sure it is. Some people - whatever, I don't know. It's just unfortunate that some random people want to break rules, that's a bad situation.

Bob, we say on the access thing that you talked to the players about this for a while, do you do this every so often?

It's just part of our summer routine when we first get them back together. It's part of our compliance meetings and I just believe strongly that if you knowingly do that then you've chosen not to be part of this program. That's just the way it will be. Anyway, that's part of our message.

It wasn't the first time we've heard that message, but it seems like you really talk about it not being just about the NFL or the next level, but it's about being a part of this program for the rest of your life?

Absolutely. You have your experience here and you have it for life. You earn your degree hopefully and you come back 20 or 30 years from now with your family and show them around and you're always a part of it. Or you choose not to be. At the end of the day, what I'm also willing to tell them is if you don't want to be here, there's 1000 kids out there that want to be in this (meeting room) chair. There are good ball players and I mean that about other universities. So you don't have to, but there's a lot of good being here and earning your degree and having this experience if you do it the right way. But if you choose not to you then, you live with the consequences with that.

And that might be a message for guys who aren't happy not playing if they've been here for a year?

Well sure, at this level and in this building it isn't easy. You come here knowing that. There isn't anybody that is promised anything. You earn your way and guys who stick around end up on the field, and play, and make a difference. That's always been the case.

Are there any guys that stand out to you now that weren't starters or they did a lot for you in practice over their four or five years here that really come to mind?

I don't know. I just see guys like Pryce Macon who toughed it out his fifth year and really had a huge year as a senior. I'm sure there's been other guys like that. Brad Davis, "Hot Sauce". He had a fifth year and he was our Don Key Award winner. He was just a special kid and really had a great senior year for us when we needed him to.

He's really picking things up well and trying to make up for lost time. He's really fitting in well and is doing good. He looks to be a powerful, explosive guy.

Bob in the secondary today, how do you think things are coming along?

They're doing well. That first group is doing a nice job. I'm pleased with what they're doing.

You said a few days ago you thought the defensive tackles might be better than people are giving it credit for. Is that still the case after a couple of scrimmages in?

Definitely. Yeah. I'm real pleased with how they're coming along.

You have a lot of tailbacks vying for playing time. Has any of them separated themselves at all?

No.

Your injury situation?

Nobody got hurt today and nobody was hurt last week, so it's pretty much the same.

Coach I heard a couple of things last night, a couple of conflicting reports on the wide receiver, Trey Metoyer?

Yeah, as far as I understand today, it's still not totally resolved.

Fans keep bugging us because they watch your videos online and see that Ronnell Lewis isn't there. Is there anything you can tell us about his status?

He just has some personal matters he's tending to, which we are in support of. Once those are taken care of, we'll see.

Did he practice today?

No.
