The Sooner Scoop will always have a lot of inside information or sensitive information that doesn't need to be discussed in public forums and on other websites. So what is said in the Sooner Scoop stays in the Sooner Scoop.

This only works if you guys make it work, and if it becomes and issue, we'll begin to cut back on the amount of good information that is passed on in here.

The Sooner Scoop ? Friday, June 20, 2014

Attention ladies and gentleman, I have an urgent and breaking news story!

CANNONBALL!

Oklahoma has been on a roll so far in the month of June with three commitments coming in since June 3 and several other players are already considering joining the ranks. Perhaps none more strongly considering the possibility than Metairie (La.) Archbishop Rummel defensive lineman Tyrell Jacobs.

The word is that Oklahoma could be getting an official visit from Jacobs next week and based on Scoop's conversation with him that could mean a quick decision could come.

Just hours after the 6-foot-4, 260-pound defensive end target picked up an offer from Jerry Montgomery he was clear about the one school that he wanted to visit.

"I'm definitely going to Oklahoma, that's the first school that I want to go see, as soon as possible. As soon as my mom gets home we're going to talk about it," Jacobs said.

The family could make the trip to Norman next week and if so they will likely be driving up. That drive has stopped several prospect from considering the Sooners through the years however for Jacobs that's a non-issue.

"I don't trip about that. I'm all about what is going to be the best fit for me, the distance and all of that I don't care about. I'm looking for the best place where I'm going to play my four years, the coaches aren't just trying to bait me in there," he said. "They just want me to come see it."

A big part of his interest in the Sooners is based on their huge win in January in Jacobs's backyard.

"I know a lot about Oklahoma, I watched that game against Alabama. That was before my recruiting process. I've been good since my sophomore year, some kids don't get that exposure, I was going to the camp, the LSU camp and killed and went to the Miami camp and killed but I'm just glad they are noticing me like I noticed them."

Jacobs, assuming he takes the visit that Scoop has been told he will (though not confirmed through him yet), a commitment seems completely possible.

**********************************************

Another player that seems to be giving the Sooners very, very real considering from the Bayou state is Pineville's Cody Ford. As Josh told you all yesterday the big offensive lineman was very, very receptive to Oklahoma's overtures in spite of his multiple-month commitment to TCU.

The Horned Frogs coaching staff has watched numerous offers come in for Ford since his commitment but it seems that even they knew that the overtures from Bill Bedenbaugh and Oklahoma was a horse of a different color.

"I don't know, they haven't said anything but when Oklahoma offered me one of (TCU's) coaches said call me so it was kind of, I guess they got nervous," Ford said.

So is that concern legitimate?

"It's the facilities, they are as nice as TCU, some are nicer. You know, they have a winning history ? it's Oklahoma," he said.

His family has been high on his commitment to head to Fort Worth but according to Ford they are all about him achieving his dreams. And in Ford's own words those dreams are likely to be reached in Norman rather than West of Dallas.

"They want me to go to a place that I can achieve my goals, which is to get to the NFL. But I don't know that I have that chance at TCU, Oklahoma has produced a lot of guys that have gone to the NFL. They are more likely to get me to the NFL," he said.

So is Scoop crazy to think that this all sounds very positive for Oklahoma? What would he term his commitment situation as right now?

"I'm committed but honestly I'm leaning toward Oklahoma. I'm going to the LSU camp in like two weeks and then a Mississippi State camp, I'm going to sit down with my coaches and my family at the end of summer and try to work some things," he admitted.

And according to Ford that is when a final decision should come and right now the Sooners are a huge favorite.

**********************************************

Finally another player that one of the Sooners most recent hires is making an impressive impact on is Olathe (Kan.) North tight end Josh Moore. The 6-foot-5, 250-pound prospect has built a strong early relationship with Jay Boulware.

" I think we have a great relationship, he is probably the funniest man I've ever met," Moore said.

There is one aspect of his decision that will be a large part in Moore's process that hasn't gotten much consideration. And though publicly things have been silent, quietly the Sooners are making major in-roads.

"Me and my mom made the trip down there [recently], oh she is obsessed with the place, she wants to go to there again already," he explained.

"She has loved it since the first time, my sophomore year, she loved the game when they played Baylor, she was more hyped up then."

**********************************************

To continue on the train of good news for the Sooners, we'll focus on four-star junior college offensive tackle Jamal Danley. The 6-foot-5, 305-pound standout from Scooba (Miss.) East Mississippi C.C. has been thought to be high on the Sooners for a little while now.

However, in a recent conversation with Scoop ? that was intended to simply confirm that plans were still on for his June 28 trip ? he went a step further.

After saying that he was still scheduled to make the trip the conversation continued and Scoop asked if there was a chance he might commit during the trip.

"Probably, I'm not sure yet [though[," Danley said. "They are my leader right now."

**********************************************

One of Oklahoma's earliest offers in recent years is to Lawrenceville (Ga.) Archer defensive back Isaiah Pryor. The son of Mike Stoops's former teammate has a great deal of interest in the Sooners and talked at length about his offer from Stoops.

"That was like one of the best things that ever happened in my life, to be able to play at Oklahoma and not have to worry about not doing well. A lot of the stress is off as far as making sure. Just enjoy the time I have left in high school," Pryor said.

Now don't take that to mean that he is thinking of committing ? he is definitely in no hurry to make a decision. However, it does sound like the Sooners offer meant he'd reached a certain echelon he was hoping to find his way too.

Part of that excitement had to do with the chance to work with Stoops, Bobby Jack Wright and the rest of the Oklahoma coaching staff.

"It was great, when I was doing drills and what not I can tell they wanted to teach me. There are some kids who aren't paying attention and at the back of the line. I really enjoyed the coaching staff and how they coached everyone. They are really invested in making people better," he said.

**********************************************

Another defensive back that Oklahoma entered the race for is San Diego St. Augustine Rivals250 cornerback Frank Buncom. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound defender actually has something of a connection to the program thanks to the Sooners ever-growing San Diego area ties.

"I knew Brennan Clay personally and I was able to watch the other two play," Buncom said. "Actually we were in the same track club growing up.

"I haven't spoken to him in a while but that would definitely be some great information if Oklahoma is going to be in my top five list I'll be trying to get in contact with Brennan."

That top five list may seem a bit far-fetched with Buncom hoping to be set on the group around August. However, he admits there is a chance he can visit Oklahoma and even if not it's an offer he has some real interest in.

That chance to talk with Clay could be a big deal and thought it won't decide things the Sooners track record of putting San Diego stars into the NFL is not lost on him.

"I wouldn't say it's necessarily a determining factor, I can see my peers from the city who fit in well and that does interest me," he said.

"Right now I haven't been able to talk to Oklahoma too much, it's all still new. The coaches emphasized San Diego kids coming there and I believe, they've won every BCS game and the national championship. You want to win and they do a lot of it."

**********************************************

Much has been made of Oklahoma's presence at the All-Poly camp in Layton, Utah, led by Sooners head coach Bob Stoops and defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery. During their time there the Sooners apparently took an interest in Edwardsville, Ill. strongside defensive end A.J. Epenesa.

The 6-foot-5, 230-pound prospect is another son of a former Iowa Hawkeye and already has an offer from Kirk Ferentz's crew. It will be interesting to see where things go but it is clear that the Sooners are more serious than ever about finding young talent and wasting no time in making sure that those players know of their legitimate interest.

**********************************************

A player whose top five was released somewhat quietly yesterday is Rivals250 wide receiver DeSean Holmes. The 5-foot-9, 170-pound speedy receiver put the Sooners into that top five but talking to a few people it sounds like the Sooners are actually in his top two.

The problem is going to be whether or not Holmes can qualify as his grades are more than somewhat questionable. If that can happen perhaps the Sooners can pull one of Southern California's best.

How does Holmes have an offer from Cal if his grades are questionable?
6/20 12:29 PM | IP: Logged
Josh, Jacobs seems very confident in himself. How good is he, or how good could he be? He said he killed it at the camps but didnt get an offer from LSU or Miami. Also why is he just a 2 Star?

Josh, thoughts on the DeBerry tweets?

Not every school runs the academics up the chain before making an offer. It's more prevalent when a school is struggling on the field.

Just wasn't particularly well known. For whatever reasons Louisiana, MS, etc. they go by the waysidefar too often IMO.

I think he is a good one, probably a mid-high three-star. Very good point of attack guy but has the athleticism to be somewhat of a pass rusher. Solid player to be sure.

I guess TCU is OU's new recruiting consultant.  Atleast someone is putting in the work

Ammo, I get the sarcasm but the reality is our staff won't be outworked or outclassed. Or am I just pumping?

I hope the former is true! lol

Little commits to A&M ,so that part re Evans brothers seems obsolete at least for now.

Josh what are your thoughts about Cody Ford and Connor Williams as players?
6/20 1:42 PM | IP: Logged
"I really enjoyed the coaching staff and how they coached everyone. They are really invested in making people better."

Whatever criticism might be levied against the staff for its failure to "close" or its work ethic, I think statements like these show that their hearts are in the right place, and focused on the right things.  JMHO.

In my experience in sales of this kind (not just selling a widget, but gaining a client), the sales that are most likely to "stick" and pay dividends are the ones where the prospect connects at a gut-level.  If you "close hard" on a kid, especially a teenager, you put that process in jeopardy.  Again, JMHO.

On a different note:  boy, how much difference does a month make in perspective.  Josh, either things are really getting going . . . or your anti-depressants are starting to kick in.

Your right I was clowning around. I have to admit TCU and its staff work hard to get on these kids early and it would be funny for OU to swoop in and steal them.

TCU getting treated like a diseased mistress with OU the apple of the eye.  If the shoes were reversed, WE would be absolutely p*ssed at that player.  And I'm chuckling while I type this... ever read of a bigger "placeholder" than this situation?  It's almost like, "oh yea, last I looked, I still have TCU as a fall-back plan... so that's good".

Saw a article a few years back that around 80% of the football team at Cal where an academic exception to the University so that would make since on his offer.

Broke down them, and a few other OT offers, in the mailbag.

I'm sure if you could at least consult the coaching staff , all would be better. Mercy!

Josh I guess the part that his connection with the Evans gives OU an advantage. Maybe I'm wrong ,but does it break the Aggie momentum? Is Little a guy that commits and backs out of it? If he doesn't then in my opinion that info is obsolete.

Are you talking about the Scoop, or the mailbag?

Scoop didn't mention Little, unless I'm going crazy, but as you mentioned in this thread, I'm confused.

Crud, you're right!

Forgot I just did OTs.

With Ford, I've seen him in person and on tape and I just love his physicality and how well he sets his base. Whether it is pass blocking or run blocking he sets up well and gets a nice punch on his pass blocking. At times in run blocking he starts throwing elbows rather than putting his hands on defenders.

The Jacobs kid goes to Archbishop Rummel, which is a absolute powerhouse program in my state of Louisiana. He plays the best of the best competition. That's 5A football in the state. They've won back to back state championships. Kid is going up against the likes of Leonard Fournette and Speedy Noils every Friday night.. If we can get a pipeline to Rummel, St. Aug, John Curtis, Evangel, Acadiana,  West Monroe, Woodlawn, Catholic, Parkview, Central, and Salmen.. OU wins the Big 12 every year and plays in the playoff every year.. These schools have sick talent. It's the reason why you can ask yourself why Lsu isn't on a four star player like Cody.. Too many players in the state ahead of him... Just reality..

I get your point, Louisiana is wildly talented. But it's not a great year for OL in Louisiana.

He is the No. 2 OL in the state.

And even if you think 'well that's just by Rivals rankings', they have only offered Tillery (headed to Notre Dame) and the MaGee kid who has committed to LSU.
