The Sooner Scoop will always have a lot of inside information or sensitive information that doesn't need to be discussed in public forums and on other websites. So what is said in the Sooner Scoop stays in the Sooner Scoop.

This only works if you guys make it work, and if it becomes and issue, we'll begin to cut back on the amount of good information that is passed on in here.

The Sooner Scoop ? Friday, August 1, 2014

Attention ladies and gentleman, I have an urgent and breaking news story!

CANNONBALL!

It seems like Scoop has told you this at least 10 times already but this time feels different so we'll take the bait again.

Malik Jefferson will visit Oklahoma this weekend.

The nation's No. 2 outside linebacker, and the No. 1 overall player in Texas, has scheduled and canceled visits to Norman at least half a dozen times now but is expected to finally make it north of the Red River this weekend.

We've said for weeks that the Mesquite (Texas) Poteet product is a longshot but isn't a guy that should totally be surrendered and this is part of why. Jefferson doesn't travel much and as such most expect he'll stay very close to home.

Good news? Of the programs on his level close to home? There aren't many and Oklahoma is as close as any of them. It's no sure thing and probably not even likely ? smart money is on Texas A&M at the moment ? but him coming up for the trip at least opens the door after Jefferson showed up at the Oklahoma/Sam Houston satellite camp in early June.

**********************************************

A player much closer to a decision who has made numerous trips to Norman is Arlington (Texas) Bowie three-star offensive tackle Madison Akamnonu.

The 6-foot-5, 276-pound prospect visited Oklahoma last weekend with his parents and there is no doubt the Sooners have one big ally within the Akamnonu family. However, the Sooners have another family member to win over still.

"With my dad, he is a Sooner, I already know who he likes, and my mom is A&M, she really likes Tech. She thinks you need to look at Tech, and my younger brother is a Texas kind of guy. They are trying to push me both ways," Akamnonu laughingly admitted.

"I like to hear everything everybody has to say, and I'll take it all into consideration."

During his visit to Norman last weekend Bob Stoops was unavoidably detained (perhaps with the Mixon situation?) but Akamnonu did call Oklahoma's head man and talk with him following the visit.

"I wasn't able to coach Stoops. He had something come up, we talked for a few minutes, how was the trip, and how I liked it and everything ? he just wanted to make sure I was well informed on everything," he said.

So how hard is dad pushing his son to get more familiar with Stoops?

"My dad will just say, you know, Oklahoma is where it's at or something like that," he said. "He really doesn't pressure me it's more about fun than anything."

**********************************************

Scoop, on Thursday night, spoke with Lawton, Okla. Rivals250 offensive guard Jalin Barnett and came away feeling as positive as ever.

Barnett isn't going to rush into a decision and now says he'll take all five of his official visits but it feels very clear this decision truly is down to Arkansas and Oklahoma.

And it doesn't help the Razorbacks, at all, that his lone trip to Fayetteville so far was not a trip that his family ? notably his grandparents ? took with him.

On the other hand they have been to Norman with him several times.

Barnett visited Norman recently and actually had a chance to spend a lot of time around the Oklahoma players ? notably offensive tackle Josiah St. John.

"This one was kind of a different visit, we should do a lot of visits like this. I went up there and was just really hanging around the players, mostly the players the whole time," Barnett said.

It seems clear that Oklahoma continued the momentum they've built for our current No. 3 player in the state.

**********************************************

Scoop doesn't have a ton to tell you on Waco (Texas) Midway three-star safety Kahlil Haughton but the word that Scoop keeps hearing is very positive for Oklahoma.

It sounds as though there is a decision being made on how, when, and where the decision will be made.

It's not a set thing but, again, it all sounds very, very positive for Oklahoma right now.

**********************************************

Very similarly and perhaps a step forward is Pineville, La. four-star offensive guard Cody Ford. The big man is working out how he'll announce his decision and the Sooners are in very good shape in spite of his current commitment to TCU.

If he isn't a Sooner by Sept. 1 Scoop will be very surprised.

**********************************************

USC wide receiver commit Desean Holmes of Pasadena, (Calif.) Bishop Alemany tells Scoop's USC buddy Blair Angulo that he has set an official visit to Oklahoma for the Nov. 8 weekend when the Sooners host Baylor.

"Baylor is a good team with good cornerbacks, so I want to see how good the Oklahoma coaches can coach when they are playing a good team," Holmes said.

The four-star who pledged to the Trojans in mid July says he is still firmly committed to USC, but wants to check out Oklahoma, which was one of the first schools to recruit him.

"I'm expecting a good environment [in Norman]," Holmes said. "The coaches tell me it's cool out there and it's pretty nice. I talk to coach Jay Norvell the most."

**********************************************

Some news on defensive end recruiting after many talked about the expectation that Neville Gallimore and Breylin Mitchell thought to be among Oklahoma's top targets before the commitments of Tyrell Jacobs and Kenneth Mann last week.

Well following those decisions don't take it to mean that Oklahoma is done at defensive end but do take it to mean that they will be choosy.

It sounds as though Mitchell is pretty much on the outside looking in while Gallimore is still very much a part of things and is, loosely, expected to take a visit for the Tennessee game weekend ? can that weekend get much bigger?

Gallimore seems to have seen Florida State jump a bit out in front but Oklahoma is very, very much in this race.

But for Mitchell it seems the quiet man's book has all but closed.

**********************************************

Another huge name has added his name to the Tennessee visit weekend as Rivals100 offensive tackle Pat Allen will be in Norman when the Sooners host the orange navy from Knoxville.

The Sooners are one of his final five programs along with Arkansas, Michigan, Tennessee, and Georgia.

Considering his desire to return closer to home one would have to think the Sooners have a very real chance here.

**********************************************

And yet another…

It looks as though Columbus (Ohio) Marion Franklin three-star linebacker Anthony Mckee is yet another player hoping to make it to Norman for the Tennessee game.

"I'm going to take an official, I'm not sure when yet but I was thinking the Tennessee game," he said.

McKee seems very high on Oklahoma and if that visit goes well perhaps he could get the ball rolling for some decisions in front of so many other players the Sooners would like to reel in a commitment from.

**********************************************

There has been plenty of talk about Oklahoma's 2015 visitors this weekend - P.J. Mbanasor, Will Sunderland, Malik Jefferson and even a few discussing 2016 visitors Clark Yarbrough, Rashard Lawrence and the like but one player who hasn't been much mentioned so far is Manor, Texas star linebacker Erick Fowler.

The elite prospect could be the type of player to blow up this spring and Scoop is willing to bet he leaves Norman with an offer this weekend. He is a big-time prospect and making the drive up shows the reciprocal interest that Oklahoma is seeking from players these days.

**********************************************

OK, it's time for Josh's July checkup on the class of 2015. For those unfamiliar every year on the first Friday of each month, I (Josh) invade Scoop's personal space and take my guesses at just what players could fill out the remaining spots in Oklahoma's currently ongoing recruiting class.

Right now Oklahoma has 84 players on scholarship, with 1 player's status still uncertain of their enrollment in the fall, seven commitments and has 18 players graduating following the 2014 season.

I always anticipate at least four departures either via NFL draft, transfer, or any of 1,000 other possibilities, which would mean Oklahoma has four departures to go along with 19 openings already in place. With that in mind Scoop is working under the thought of the Sooners landing 23 total in the 2014 class so I'll plan accordingly. Though as always there is a lot of volatility in how that could play out and the number could move up or down depending on any number of things. So, thanks to my mathematical education it would seem the Sooners have 14 spots available and there is still some question of whether or not they will hit the number of 85 for the upcoming season.

Additionally a level of confidence will be listed with each of the selections.

And in a new feature I'll take a stab at the next commitment of the group selected.

Players on Last Month's List Who Aren't There in July: Breylin Mitchell, Martinas Rankin

Players I Got Right Last Month: Tyrell Jacobs

Players I Got Wrong Last Month: Josh Moore (Ohio State)

Quarterback

I do think Oklahoma has made a good run at Torrance Gibson but with Oklahoma making it's two earliest quarterback offers ever toward the class of 2016 and another this week it seems that 2015 isn't the focus. Add in that Gibson visited Ohio State and now seems in love with the Buckeyes, this may be the first class since 2005 that doesn't have a quarterback in it. Perhaps it's a good omen though as the class of 2006's quarterback was some kid named Sam Bradford.

Running Back

Rodney Anderson - Level of Confidence: - COMMITTED

Wide Receiver

John Humphrey - Level of Confidence: 80%

Humphrey announced his top two earlier this week with the Sooners and Notre Dame comprising his top pair. Humphrey has talked with me somewhat about the chance to play against Texas in college, following is trip to Austin in which I got the feeling he felt a bit led on in regard to visiting and getting a subsequent offer.

I don't think I need to tell you all that the chance to do that is in Norman, not South Bend.

To me the only way this goes wrong is if he elects to wait until All-American week to decide and the Sooners run out of spots first.

Tight End

With the loss of Moore to the effort, I can't help but wonder if Oklahoma is going to wait and see if someone jumps out at them. If not, why not wait a year? They've got three tight ends currently set to return in 2015 so it's not as though there is an immediate need, at least not as there is at several other positions.

Offensive Line

Madison Akamnonu - Level of Confidence: 75%

Akamnonu is down to a final two and as you read above the Sooners have an ally in his decision-making process. I'm not going to say it's a 'done deal' because he hasn't told me anything along those lines but I definitely get the feeling that he has given Oklahoma as many chances as possible to make an impression and that can't be overlooked.

Pat Allen - Level of Confidence: 35%

Allen told us in the spring that Oklahoma was a school he was very interested in due to his connections to the Big 12 region and awareness of Oklahoma's standing within that area. It's early to see if things shift dramatically but he has made a lot of comments on being big on the Sooners and as we said above, has already set his OU official. Could he surprise everyone with an early decision?

Jalin Barnett - Level of Confidence: 85%

As I said last month: 'an interesting school to keep an eye on is Arkansas as their offensive line coach, Sam Pittman, has made a real impression so far' and as you read above that hasn't stopped as of late. The Sooners are the heavy, heavy favorite here but should Arkansas surprise people and find their feet in the SEC this year perhaps they can make it more interesting than most expect.

Jamal Danley - Level of Confidence: 65%

Sooner or later Danley is going to make his trip to Norman and when he does a commitment seems very, very likely either on the trip or shortly afterward. Danley likes Oklahoma's need at tackle and .

Bobby Evans - COMMITTED

Cody Ford - Level of Confidence: 65%

Ford may be committed to TCU but that feels a lot like a formality right now. The big concern was whether or not LSU would offer the big offensive lineman following their camp a week ago. That didn't happen and now it seems very much like a decision could come for the Sooners any day now.

Dominique Hearne - COMMITTED

Nose Tackle

Marquise Overton - COMMITTED

Defensive End

Neville Gallimore - Level of Confidence: 35%

Gallimore has picked up a load of attention since his offer from the Sooners but Jerry Montgomery got in early and has built a good relationship here. It's not anything I'm overly confident in but Oklahoma seems a very possible potential visit locale for the Canadian prospect. There is a long way to go and Florida State is a very real contender as well.

Tyrell Jacobs - COMMITTED

Kenneth Mann - COMMITTED

Linebacker

Anthony McKee - Level of Confidence: 45%

As mentioned above, it looks as though Oklahoma will host McKee as yet another big Tennessee visitor. If that visit happens on that weekend don't be surprised if Oklahoma is his final choice and it could even happen that weekend.

Cassius Peat - Level of Confidence: 35%

Peat is an interesting guy that isn't a set deal for anyone but his connections to Oklahoma and interest in the program are impossible to ignore. Keep an eye on him as this isn't anything that will be decided in the relatively near future and with his plan to visit Norman twice before his decision (one unofficial visit) it seems a good omen for his interest.

Bo Wallace - Level of Confidence: 40%

Wallace has set one of his official visits for Norman and is definitely all about Oklahoma and a few others. The school to keep an eye on is Texas A&M who, if they offer, could really become part of his decision in a big way.

Anthony Wheeler - Level of Confidence: 50%

Wheeler has said Oklahoma is, at least, in his top two for quite a while now and a decision at any moment wouldn't really surprise anyone. However he is showing a few programs to his father before coming to a decision. Still though this feels like he is one of those guys we'll all wake up one morning and realize he has made the call..

Cornerback

P.J. Mbanasor - COMMITTED

Safety

Kahlil Haughton - Level of Confidence: 65% NEXT COMMIT

I continue to hear that Haughton is leaning, strongly, Oklahoma's way. However the longer and longer you hear things like that without a decision actually coming out you feel more and more as though something is amok. However, I'm staying confident, for now, as Oklahoma has done what they need to and made a real impression on him.

Jamile Johnson - COMMITTED

Will Sunderland - Level of Confidence: 75%

This one kind of feels like a 'when' not 'if' situation. I know that many are going to worry about some of his comments but haven't talked to enough people close to the situation I get the feeling Sunderland is having some fun with the process and is simply making sure every school knows they have a chance. He is also making yet another trip to Norman this weekend ? his what, No. 50, since last week? Again 'just wait for it'.

Athlete

Scrappy Norman - Level of Confidence: 45%

This is me taking a bit of a flier here as right now Norman is a wide receiver target for the Sooners. However the reality is many schools are looking at Norman as a defensive back and could Oklahoma shift their focus to having him in the secondary? I think so and if he can buy in the Sooners could become very real contenders with some already feeling they lead.

Akamnonu's mom liking Tech is a little worrisome. It's a bit odd, too, seeing how OU is both closer and offers a stronger program for his major.

Are we still gonna recruit him hard or what? I'd really like that kid. But we can't take 4 safties on one class.

Josh, kinda surprised you are predicting only 1 corner commit & still have Johnson being on board at signing day.

Thoughts on likelihood of someone like Reid taking Johnson's spot & Norvell grabbing another WR?

GREAT SCOOP!

Tennessee game is obviously massive. Need to beat them like 45-0 and have some unique stuff going on for the recruits, need to be great atmosphere which I'm sure it will be.

Josh, where do you see OUs class finishing...Top 20, top 15?

Looking at the OL class, if a guy like Allen went elsewhere who would you feel comfortable putting for another OL commit?

How many commits do you see before the first game?

If Humphrey waits do you see Coutte for WR since Newsome is waiting too?

Odd that OU doesn't have 1 LB committed yet.  And everyone that was on Josh's list should be at 15% odds.

I'm told the numbers are being watched on Reid but for now he is ABSOLUTELY being recruited as a guy they'll take.

1) I pretty much leave commitments on it until I am certain they won't be part of things. As for corner, I kind of see Scrappy Norman taking that role.

2) Think both are absolute possibilities, I just struggle with the idea that in an offense like Oklahoma's they'd only sign one player.

1) I think it'll end up somewhere between 13-17.

2) Thank you for giving me yet another spot for my Josh Jones rant for this week. To me he should already be an offer type, I think he is going to be special in the college game. But, as I'm not sure OU shares my sentiment on him, the guy that they might eyeball...Brandon Bowen.

3) I'm guessing no less than one and probably as many as three.

4) If OU takes Coutee, they'd take two IMO. I don't see him bumping Humphrey.

He is originally from Kansas City and likes the idea of playing closer to home (where I believe his father still lives).

Again not exactly 'home' but closer than any of the others.

JOSH- Couple Q's-
  1. Why so confident of having Scrappy Norman on the list at 45% vs. others? (Sorry if this has been answered)
  2. Also, It's seemed like he wants to visit but that just hasn't happened or been set up yet? Any way he makes it in for Tennessee as well?
  3. Can you guys update the "Visit Dates" list under the football recruiting tab? I think we're chomping at the bit for the entire Tennessee visit list to come together! It's back to football time!
