The Sooner Scoop will always have a lot of inside information or sensitive information that doesn't need to be discussed in public forums and on other websites. So what is said in the Sooner Scoop stays in the Sooner Scoop.

This only works if you guys make it work, and if it becomes and issue, we'll begin to cut back on the amount of good information that is passed on in here.

The Sooner Scoop ? Friday, August 15, 2014

Attention ladies and gentleman, I have an urgent and breaking news story!

CANNONBALL!

Scoop knows that you all are always looking for new names to remember and Scoop has a new one for you to remember.

And nowhere are people looking for names to remember more than at linebacker, and in this case the guy to keep an eye on? Irving (Texas) Nimitz outside linebacker Michael Scott.

Scott, an SMU commitment, has been hearing from Oklahoma more and more as of late and the Sooners have already made a strong impression.

In fact the 6-foot-4, 220-pound edge-rushing linebacker is already talking about plans to take a visit to Norman perhaps even in the next few weeks. If that visit happens, Scoop isn't ready to rule out an offer happening.

The offer isn't so much about talent ? Scott is raw but shows real promise on tape ? as it is the reality that if you offer a player already committed to SMU and who made a quick trip to Norman after their first strong interest; you are likely on the verge of picking up a commitment with said offer.

Do the Sooners feel Scott is a guy they'd take over some other linebacker targets they've been in on for a long time? Do they feel that he is their equal? That really is the question because with an offer Scott is likely a Sooner.

Either way, keep an eye on the raw but promising linebacker from the Dallas metroplex.

**********************************************

Speaking of good evaluations by the Sooners; Burleson, Texas defensive end commitment Kenneth Mann is a guy that many are overlooking but according to a few sources you can expect that to change going forward.

"You watch, he'll blow up this fall, offers will start rolling in for that kid," one source said.

From what Scoop has gathered Mann was a guy that Oklahoma was delaying on but after going back and watching some tape of him compared to some other defensive ends - who are perhaps a bit more well known - the realization set in that the guy they were looking for was right in front of them.

The 6-foot-4, 240-pound edge defender has some very good offers but while Scoop knows that some, probably rightly, see Tyrell Jacobs as something of a project don't be surprised if six months from now people are patting Jerry Montgomery on the back for identifying a guy that too many other elite programs had looked past.

And even Scoop's buddy Josh had to weight in on the recent commitment.

"He is a guy that just gets it, if he stays healthy, he'll have a strong career. It's always tough to know who will be a star and who won't but his size is impressive and he has more athleticism than most realize. You add in that he is a kid that has his head on straight who has overcome a lot in his life and you can bet he has real promise."

**********************************************

A defensive lineman with plenty of early notoriety is Monroe (La.) Neville class of 2016 Rivals100 defensive tackle Rashard Lawrence. The 6-foot-2, 307-pound prospect is ranked as the nation's No. 13 interior defensive lineman and recently made his way to Norman.

It's safe to say that things went very, very well for Montgomery and the Sooners.

"It was good to get a feel for those guys, a very great thing," Lawrence said. "(Montgomery) came after me early and helped me to get a feel for the other coaches while I was up there."

During the trip he spent most of his time around Oklahoma's second-year defensive line coach and though the state of Louisiana's No. 7 prospect has heard plenty of top pitches already in his recruitment the Sooners did nothing of the sort.

"It wasn't really about recruiting. It was just me and my family just talking to a regular person. Coach Montgomery does a great job with his players, talking to people, it wasn't just about we are trying to get you at Oklahoma; it was more about shooting the breeze, having fun. I want to play for a coach that is fun in a way but not on the field. With his players, when it's time to go ? you want to pick your spots to have fun.

"It wasn't them trying to recruit me."

And it appears the laid back approach to his recruitment was a near home run for the Sooners.

"It really surprised me, sometimes you get people that just pressure you, and I didn't feel that at Oklahoma ? not even with the coaches. It was just down to Earth, recruiting me at the same time. I really enjoyed that about Oklahoma," he said.

"I can tell you one thing, I will be back in Norman, not as frequently, but for a game, just for a visit. Oklahoma really impressed me, I can pretty much tell you that OU will be there on my commitment date, he just really impressed me. It was just like I went there and talked and visited.

"I really can't wait to get up there, I'll be attending the Oklahoma ? Texas game. Also I look forward to getting closer to coach Montgomery. I don't have a list right now but Oklahoma will be one of my favorites."

Along with the Sooners, he says LSU and Oregon will be among his top group of programs. And though the Sooners have had a tough time against LSU for elite Louisiana talent there is a unique aspect that Oklahoma has to offer.

"Oklahoma just really blew me away, it was the people. Not just the facilities ? everyone has nice facilities. Norman is a football town, it sits off to itself and you can tell it's what the town I about," he said.

"I can't wait to get back down there."

**********************************************

Sometimes Scoop has big stories with tons of notes and sometimes it's just a single note. But, usually that note is something that blew the staff's hair back a bit.

Obviously last week's Scoop had a ton of positive Malik Jefferson buzz but no one is losing their mind as of yet. An interesting addition that Scoop got from one of it's most long-time and trusted sources, who just so happens to be from the Mesquite area?

"I've gotten to know (Jefferson) well and he tells me he is going out of state," the source said.

That rumor existed before his trip to Norman but it does seem that he is more open to the idea of getting out of state than some have expected.

Scoop acknowledges this flies in the face of everything we've heard about the five-star linebacker and as such is treating it a bit hesitantly but again this is a source that has been money time after time.

We'll see but remember this down the road.

**********************************************

When Oklahoma picked up a commitment from John Humphrey just under two weeks ago there was some real questions of whether or not Oklahoma was going to be done in recruiting wide receivers.

After a huge haul last year and already having their need at slot receiver addressed, some felt that would be the end of the run.

But it looks as though there is one receiver that still has the 'go' from Jay Norvell and the Sooner staff.

That player?

Aledo, Texas speed merchant Ryan Newsome.

Scoop has talked to a few sources and it sounds very much like it's Newsome or bust at wide receiver. Most of the rest of Oklahoma's previous targets have been told the Sooners are simply out of spots as things currently stand.

Now, recruiting isn't handled in a vacuum so numbers change as situations change but as things stand right now Oklahoma's wide receiver class will either be Humphrey by himself or Humphrey and Newsome.

The good news? It speaks volumes for what the Sooners see from their young wide receivers who have hit campus from the class of 2014.

**********************************************

There was some big news this week that the Sooners seem to still be involved with Houston Lamar Rivals250 running back Tyreik Gray and that he still plans to visit Norman.

The thing is that Gray isn't an overly active communicator, with most any coaching staff that Scoop has heard about. So there is a possibility that his information on Oklahoma's visit is a bit dated.

Now, that being said, Scoop and Josh have told you for quite some time that if there was any running back that they could see the Sooners using to accompany the commitment of Rodney Anderson it would be Gray.

Scoop is going to check around some more on Gray and try to catch up with the nation's No. 15 running back as well as check around to see just how involved the Sooners still are.

Honestly it kind of has a feel of continuing to recruit Gray and seeing how numbers work out at a few other positions.

**********************************************

Without question one of the positions being watched is offensive line where the Sooners are close to knowing the verdict of Danville (Calif.) San Ramon Valley three-star offensive tackle Dru Samia(suh-my-uh).

The 6-foot-5, 280-pound standout with offers from not only Oklahoma but UCLA, Arizona, Cal, Colorado, Texas Tech, Utah, and Washington St, talked briefly with Scoop on Thursday and confirmed his plan as he had talked about prior to his visit to Norman.

"I'm going to decide next Friday, Aug. 22," Samia said of the decision that will take place on his birthday.

Samia will not be having a ceremony and instead will be announcing his decision on Twitter.

Scoop has been hearing some positives around this decision and his last second cancellation of a trip to UCLA should not be overlooked as 'nothing', as Scoop was told that the expectation was that Samia would visit Westwood and commit while on campus.

For him to not make that trip definitely put the UCLA coaching staff, namely offensive line coach Adrian Klemm on alert.

Hopefully next week, presumably just before his announcement, Scoop and/or Josh will have much more with you here.

**********************************************

Though there is plenty of reason, both publicly and privately, for optimism in regard to Samia one player that few have been talking about the Sooners with is Richmond (Va.) St. Christopher's Rivals250 linebacker Ricky Deberry.

However, Scoop has talked to a few people who have said Jerry Montgomery has built a strong relationship with Deberry's father and that Oklahoma are as likely a choice as anyone under current consideration.

DeBerry, as Scoop has been told, will be visiting Norman for the Tennessee game and the Sooners could do a ton to really establish themselves with the cream of the crop in his recruitment.

That guy is putting in work, or grinding as they say.

Do the question marks in the first couple paragraphs mean something? Is there a ? code that this sooner scooper doesn't know about?  Or are you just asking the readers if Michael Scott looks good on tape?

I think it shows that Bedenbaugh and Kish can't recruit their positions very well. Remember, JM is the guy that solidified Frison last year.

I would say no, Tommie wouldn't say that as that's the absolute worst use of "crunk" I've ever seen.

Michael Scott

From 247 Sports (June 5, 2014)

Lockhart appears to be a runaway choice as the state's best.

Today, we continue with a look at the defensive ends.

The Top Eight

1. James Lockhart (6-3, 245) Ennis
U.S. Army All-American who is a force on one of the best defenses in the state.

2. Charles Omenihu (6-5, 220) Rowlett ? Committed to Texas
He has some tremendous tools but is raw. Best football appears to be ahead of him.

3. Michael Scott (6-5, 210) Irving Nimitz
Somewhat of an unknown but has power conference offers. Could be a fall riser.

4. Louis Brown (6-6, 208) Burton ? Committed to Baylor
Tremendous athlete. Projects to a number of positions but probably is best at end.

5. Kenneth Mann (6-4, 240) Burleson
Good athlete at his size. Could potentially slide inside.

6. Dorance Armstrong (6-4, 220) Houston North Shore
Great frame and still growing into his body. Has the potential to blow up this fall.

7. Breylin Mitchell (6-3, 253) Round Rock ? Committed to TCU
Productive player throughout his career. Early commit to the Horned Frogs.

8. Tyrell Thompson (6-2, 250) Copperas Cove
Had a good showing at Texas camp last summer.

Josh or Eddie....LB Michael Scott?

I noticed that SMU has another '15 LB named Delontae Scott also from Nimitz...and both committed the same day....are they brothers?

If OU is backing away from Scrappy and USC and UCLA actually did back away and not the other way around you gotta think he has some serious grade issues because the guy is just too filthy to be looking so hard at Washington st.

Not sure yet on that one as I always got the feeling he was as much an 'ATH' offer as WR.

I don't feel like he'll go that far from home, I'm not as convinced as Scoop's source that he'll leave the state but I know who it came from and I know he knows his stuff - so it's interesting for sure.
