Commit GIF Breakdown: Creed Humphrey

One of the Sooner State's top talents is staying inside the Oklahoma border with Monday's announcement that Shawnee (Okla.) three-star offensive lineman Creed Humphrey was flipping his commitment from Texas A&M to the University of Oklahoma.

By landing the nation's No. 5 center, the Sooners have now earned from commitments from the entire top five in the 2017 Sooner State Rankings.

Unlike some centers that lack the size to keep larger, stronger defensive tackles from collapsing the pocket, Humphrey is most definitely a Bill Bedenbaugh linemen with great size, a strong base, and incredible upper body strength. You can run straight ahead behind the 6-foot-4, 290-pound Humphrey, because he’s someone you can trust to win the point of contact and push the line of scrimmage forward.

While he may not possess the athleticism to pull and get to the outside as a lead blocker, that’s something Bedenbaugh rarely asks of his centers. Even on this play Humphrey identifies the outside linebacker, tracks him down on the inside shoulder, and completely takes him out of the play. Now, this is obviously a designed reverse, but you tell me who makes the tackle if they had continued with the initial handoff. If the ball-carrier can beat the middle linebacker (No. 44) to the edge, he’s off to the races.

Again, Humphrey demonstrates a capability of locking on defenders in the second level and not losing them in the open field. Not only does he not allow the linebacker to beat him to the outside, Humphrey overpowers him and his buddy to the ground, because like any good offensive lineman, the newest Oklahoma commitment has that nasty streak.

And while his leg kick would never confuse anyone for a future left tackle, Humphrey demonstrates that he can shuffle his feet and maintain an athletic position without losing his balance. It’s also another example of his effortless upper-body strength.

At 6-foot-4, 290 pounds, Humphrey is going to almost exclusively going up against defenders with a lower center of gravity than himself at Shawnee. A concern would be that it’s too easy for the nation’s No. 5 center to allow himself to get tall and lose leverage against the shorter opponent.

However, as you can see on this play, Humphrey stays low while firing off the ball, locks his hands underneath the defender’s shoulder pads, and drives his legs until he finishes off the pancake eight yards downfield. Additionally, you’ll notice, the running back follows right behind Humphrey’s path and his run ends when the block ends. He knows where his yards are going to come from.

The Shawnee center will fit right in with the recent crop of large, aggressive, and powerful Sooner offensive linemen that have been signed in recent classes.

He’s big. He’s mean. He’s strong.
