Commit Video Breakdown: Tanner Mordecai

Oklahoma added their eighth commitment to the class of 2018 with Thursday's announcement from Waco (Texas) Midway three-star quarterback Tanner Mordecai.

Mordecai may not be the biggest or fastest prospect, but the 6-foot-2, 197-pound dual-threat quarterback crosses all thresholds when it comes to both size and athleticism to play the position at the college level - especially for an offensive coordinator like Lincoln Riley, who values intelligence, timing, and accuracy more heavily compared to physical traits.

No one will confuse Mordecai with Baker Mayfield in terms of escapability, but he does still possess that same intuition for eluding surefire sacks and making something out of nothing, despite not being a burner in the open field.

In the first play in the video below, you can see how Mordecai recognizes the blitz, rolls to the right to give himself more time and space, and throws to the vacated area over the top for a touchdown when the defender double teams the underneath route. It's that combination of instincts, subtle mobility, and quick recognition that make him an attractive recruit for an offense like Oklahoma's.

Mordecai's quick, compact throwing motion generates consistent accuracy and especially allows him to stay precise while throwing on the run. There are also probably few guys who can match his touch and accuracy hitting guys in stride downfield.

It's also apparent that Mordecai has absolute trust in his arm when he knows he can let it fly over the top or towards the sideline. Although, more examples of Mordecai driving the ball in front of safeties in the middle of the field would be helpful in a complete evaluation of his game.

Who knows if it's the surprising mobility or the quick, accurate release from the ear, but something in Mordecai's style is reminiscent of former Michigan State quarterback and NFL Pro Bowler, Kirk Cousins.
