After two seasons of special teams struggles, it was clear the Sooners needed to shore up their depth at place kicker.
On Thursday, they took a step in that direction.
Florida State kicker Tyler Keltner announced his commitment to the Sooners in a social media post. Keltner, a graduate transfer, has one year of eligibility remaining.
Keltner did not start during his lone season, making his only extra-point attempt, but he saw plenty of action during his four seasons at East Tennessee State. He made 56 of 74 field-goal attempts (75.7%), including a career-best 18 of 23 in 2021. He's also made all 131 of his career extra-point attempts, and career-long field goal of 54 yards is an ETSU record.
Adding Keltner comes after two up-and-down seasons from Zach Schmit. After making just 12-of-18 attempts in 2022, Schmit was statistically better in 2023, making 15 of 21 attempts. But that included a stretch where he made just four of eight attempts during conference play, including missing a critical field goal in the 27-24 loss to Oklahoma State. The Sooners' other kicker options — Gavin Marshall and Redi Mustafaraj — didn't see playing time during the season.
Heading into the spring, the Sooners will now have competition for their starting kicking spot.
