LINCOLN, Nebraska -- This year's Oklahoma-Nebraska matchup was lacking its usual hype. That didn't stop Adrian Peterson from bringing his A game.
Peterson rushed for over 100 yards and two touchdowns in the first half as Oklahoma opened a big lead and held on for a 31-24
victory over Nebraska in a Big 12 Conference matchup.
Oklahoma (5-3, 4-1 Big 12 South) led 21-3 at halftime thanks to Peterson and its defense.
Hampered by an ankle injury for much of the season, Peterson finally looked healthy and scored on a 36-yard run less than three minutes into the game to open the scoring. He added a two-yard TD run with 11:27 left in the first half to make it 14-0.
Peterson finished with 155 yards on 24 carries.
With one minute remaining in the second quarter, Sooners cornerback Chijioke Onyenegecha made his first career
interception and returned it 63 yards for a score.
Nebraska (5-3, 2-3 North) fell behind, 24-3, early in the third quarter, as Garrett Hartley booted a 50-yard field goal after an interception by defensive lineman Dusty Dvoracek on the Cornhuskers' first drive of the second half.
Nebraska chipped away at the deficit as Zac Taylor threw a three-yard touchdown pass to Terrence Nunn with 5:17 to play in the third quarter and hit Nate Swift with a 25-yard TD on the opening play of the fourth quarter to close to 24-17 with 14:53 remaining.
Kejuan Jones pushed the lead back to 14 points with a 17-yard touchdown run with 10:58 left.
Swift caught his second TD pass of the day, an 18-yarder from running back Cory Ross, with 5:56 to go, but the Cornhuskers could get no closer.
Taylor completed 25-of-45 passes for 249 yards and was intercepted twice. His favorite target was Swift, who hauled in
nine passes for 116 yards for Nebraska, which is 1-3 after a 4-0 start.
