The shooting was non-fatal. The gunshot hit Cousins in his rear shoulder.

"The bullet struck him in the back of the shoulder and doctors are not planning surgery," OU coach Lon Kruger said. "He should be healed in a few weeks and begin summer activities with the rest of the team in June. We're very thankful it wasn't worse than it was."
Kruger said Cousins was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was out with friends when another person fired a shot that caught Cousins.
"Everyone we've spoken to said they don't believe anyone in his group was a target," Kruger said.
Cousins, a 6-foot-4 junior, had a breakout season last year. After averaging just 2.7 points per game as a freshman, he averaged 11.0 points and 4.2 boards per game as sophomore.
