Recruiting Plus: Bomar walks on Crimson carpet

It’s not often that the nation’s top quarterback graces your campus, this is a thought that had to be in the back of Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops’ mind heading into this weekend. His preparation more than paid off as Grand Prarie, Texas star signal caller Rhett Bomar made his way to Norman this weekend, and met many of the Sooner states most beloved citizens.

“I had a really good time this weekend,” Bomar said. “We got there I think around 9:30 in the morning, and saw this locker with my nameplate on it. They also had a jersey with my name and number on it inside it was pretty cool. Then, coach (Chuck) Long showed me some film, and we just talked about things in the offense.”

The favorite to be the nation’s top quarterback in 2004, said what really impressed him was all of the former Sooner greats he had the opportunity to meet.

“I met a lot of people while I was there,” he said. “I met Jack Mildren, J.C. Watts, Toby Keith and quite a few others, but most of the day Josh Heupel was with me and my dad, he just showed us around and answered questions we had.”

ESPN Gameday has become the “TRL” of college football pre-game shows, its cast makes up some of the most familiar faces in sports broadcasting, which makes it easy to understand why Bomar’s meeting with the Gameday crew was one of the highlights of his day.

“Coach Stoops took me over and introduced me to Chris Fowler, Kirk Herbstreit, and Lee Corso,” he said.

Now that he’s seen both Oklahoma and Texas up close and personal where do things stand?

“I’m not ready to make a decision yet,” he said. “I’ve got spring practice coming up and I want to focus on that for now. Once it’s over something might happen, but I’m not really sure.”

As often is the case great players want to play together, this weekend Bomar got the sales pitch from several of Oklahoma's most recent signees.

"I saw Tony Cade, Lewis Baker, and I think (Lawrence) Dampeer," he said. "They were all telling me that I should come up there and play with them."

Bomar did have plenty of compliments for the program, facilities, and the fans as well.

“I really enjoyed myself, and nothing has changed Oklahoma is still right there near the top of my list.”

He plans to begin spring practice April 26th.
