Sooners Detour to Iowa

Few players in the country have seen more activity in their recruitment over the past few weeks than West Des Moines (Iowa) Dowling Catholic defensive end John Waggoner. The 6-foot-5, 240-pound edge defender has seen himself go from a well known player to a prospect holding some of the most elite offers in the country.

Since late March Waggoner has picked up offers from Ohio State, Penn State, LSU, and Oklahoma. The latter two came yesterday and Waggoner summed up his past few weeks succinctly.

"Yeah it's been nuts the past few weeks," Waggoner said.

The Iowa native has offers from both of the power five programs within his own state lines but says that while Iowa isn't familiar recruiting ground to Oklahoma, nor most of his offer list, that doesn't mean he won't consider leaving his home state.

"Location really isn't a big deal to me, I just want the right school for me," he said. "So yeah I would have interest in (Oklahoma) for sure."

Waggoner was offered by Oklahoma's second-year defensive line coach Calvin Thibodeaux who wasted no time from finding Waggoner's film to making an offer.

"He said he was on twitter and checked out my film and watched about five snaps and then followed me and told me to call him," he said. "He talked about the longevity their program has had and how I could fit in it."

That longevity and the success, particularly under Bob Stoops, is the primary piece of information that Waggoner currently has on the big defender.

"(I know) that they are always a very competitive program and extremely successful."
