Sooners make way onto All-Big 12 list

Oklahoma's 2009 season will long be remembered for the number of key injuries the team sustained throughout the year. On Tuesday, the All-Big 12 was littered with Sooners who managed to survive 2009's trials and tribulations.

Some of the biggest and most important contributors to Oklahoma's success in 2009 weren't the players with the highest honors, as Ryan Broyles, Demarco Murray and Jeremy Beal all received second-team honors.
In fact, it is difficult to argue that Dominique Franks had a better season at cornerback than Brian Jackson, yet Franks was named to the All-Big 12 first-team, while Jackson was relegated to second-team status.
In a season where OU struggled offensively at times, Trent Williams was the lone member of the Sooner offense to be recognized as a first-team selection.
It is also in-line with the theme of 2009 that one player who had a season-ending injury, Brody Eldridge, was recognized as a second-team All-Big 12 selection.
The ups and downs of the 2009 season are well-represented in this year's All-Big 12 team. Sam Bradford and Jermaine Gresham are noticeably absent from postseason honors.
Not only did that change the face of the Sooners, but it took away from the considerable star quality of this overall list.
But the talent that remained for Oklahoma was well-represented.
Through so many struggles, the All-Big 12 team is generally the best way to put any team under the microscope.
Nebraska had the conference's best defense and led the way with four first-team selections on that side of the ball.
Yet the Huskers did not have a single offensive selection on that same first-team, and only one position player (Roy Helu, Jr.) on the second-team.
The Sooners were well-represented on the defensive side of the ball. They also produced three second-team position selections (Murray, Broyles, Eldridge) along with Williams' recognition.
But OU's lack of capable receivers, and an underwhelming offensive line, was too much to overcome with overwhelming injuries and the inexperience resulting from those losses.
But this year's All-Big 12 team does send a message to Sooner fans for the future. There is still plenty of talent in Norman.
"The number of players recognized is probably the thing that pleases me the most," said Bob Stoops. "We had some adversity this year, but our players never lost sight of the need for individual excellence and accountability, and how those things contribute to a strong team atmosphere."
