Oklahoma is hoping outfielder Hannah Coor is able to return soon from an ankle sprain.
The redshirt junior appeared to suffer the injury earlier this month during the game against San Diego State over opening weekend. Coor did not return to action through the remaining four games of the weekend, and she missed all four games this past weekend at the Getterman Classic.
OU coach Patty Gasso said Coor escaped a serious injury, but is still working to return to action.
"Nothing is broken, which is good," Gasso said. "It was just a really hard sprain, it’s been bruised. She’s in a boot but I think she’s going to get out of the boot this week. She’s doing rehab at least twice a day.
"She’s not too far. She’s definitely going to be back in commission. I just don’t know how soon, but the boot is about to come off, so that’s good news."
Coor has dealt with injuries — particularly back issues — for most of her Sooner career. She appeared in 40 games as a true freshman in 2022, then played just three games in 2023 before missing the remainder of the season with a back injury. She appeared in 63 games last season primarily as a defensive replacement.
Coor logged one start in the outfield and went two for four at the plate with an RBI before her injury. With Coor out of the lineup, the Sooners have leaned on true sophomore Ella Parker to play in the outfield.
Ella Parker showing no signs of slowing down
Parker was the offensive standout through opening weekend in California.
At the Getterman Classic last weekend, Parker simply built on her superb start to the season.
Through 10 games, Parker has posted an eye-popping .647 batting average, logging 22 hits in 34 at bats. She leads the team in slugging percentage (1.118), on-base percentage (.707), runs (16) and hits (22) — no one else on the team has more than 11 hits — and she ties the team lead in RBIs (14) and home runs (3). The expectations were already high for Parker, who was named to the Women's College World Series All-Tournament team as a true, but she's been even better than expected.
Gasso even compared her to a former Sooner legend.
"I have seen her grow up quite a bit," Gasso said. "So she came in as a somewhat intimidated freshman and tried to find where she was going to fit on this team. So fortunately, went through that. Got through it. Was one of the better freshman hitters in the country. I think maturity has helped her quite a bit. Her learning, but her athleticism is taking over now to a different level. And she can’t be stopped.
"I think that they intentionally walked her once but she is swinging at a different pace. She’s on like a (Jocelyn) Alo look with her at the plate."
Abby Dayton, the leadoff hitter
OU hitting coach JT Gasso has seemingly found Dayton's place in the lineup.
The newcomer opened the season batting in the nine-hole, but has since been moved to the leadoff spot. Dayton has been solid in her first two weekends as a Sooner, posting a batting average of .379. She ranks second on the team in hits (13) and runs (11).
"It's worked really well," Gasso said. "She has a lot of weapons. The first game we played, she put us ahead 1-0 by hitting her own bomb, but she can lay down bunts. She can chop things in the ground. She's a really smart hitter, and has a lot of, like I said, a lot of weapons. Getting her on base sets up Ella Parker.
"Abby has the speed. So we could run, we could hit and run, run and hit, straight steal. There's a lot of things we could do with Ella, so it's worked out really well. She's done a great job there."
