Sooners Won't Sleep on Serra

Few programs in the country have tantalized Oklahoma more over the years, with no delivery, than Gardena (Calif.) Junipero Serra. That reality hasn't dampened the Sooners spirit though with their latest offer at the mighty program going to early Rivals100 linebacker Merlin Robertson. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound rising junior is another in line for the Cavaliers and was recently offered by Sooners inside linebackers coach Tim Kish.

Robertson's Take

"No my high school coach, coach (Scott) Altenberg called me and told me Oklahoma wanted to offer me. So he gave me coach Kish's number and told me to call. When I called that's when me and coach Kish were talking and he offered me a scholarship," Robertson recalled. "He was asking me questions about what do I know about the school. Then he was just telling me how good of a football team they have every year and how academics are there."

Though he is still learning about the Sooners he says the prestige of the program is something that stands out to him. In fact he has some hopes of getting out for a trip even prior to his potential official visits coming more than 16 months from now.

"Yeah, possibly (I could make a trip)," he said.

Though Oklahoma hasn't had much luck at Serra to date Robertson says that won't hurt them. In fact it seems as though he'll be looking for a particular thing when it comes to his recruitment.

"I'm open. I'm just looking for the school that really keeps in contact with me or at least tries to. A lot of coaches say they will keep in contact but never do. That makes me wonder if they really want me or not. Even to the small universities, I just want to be somewhere that shows interest in me not only as a player, but as a person."

Robertson's only definite plan for visits this spring and summer is an unofficial visit to Cal.
