Stepping Onto the Big Stage

HOUSTON - With Oklahoma's 2018 class full of stars who shined at various spring events, even something as simple as their own spring practices, one player who has remained a bit of an unknown is Brenham, Texas wide receiver pledge Treveon Johnson. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound Johnson sat out in the spring due to an injury and for the same reason wasn't able to take part in the camps and various events many of his counterparts impressed at.

So in late August he was chomping at the bit to get on the field but that was when Hurricane Harvey was an idea more than a historical disaster for Southeast Texas.

That saddening event had far larger costs than the start of Johnson's season but after missing several weeks Johnson's season-opener against Elgin that ended in a 48-7 win saw Johnson end with just one catch for 11-yards.

So when he hit the field just Southwest of Downtown Houston last Friday night to take on Houston Episcopal it's safe to say he did so with something to prove. Not only was SCOOPHD on hand but also Oklahoma outside receivers coach Dennis Simmons - Johnson's lead recruiter for the Sooners.

During Brenham's 56-42 win the skilled receiver, who stars in a run-heavy offense, made the most of a few opportunities, to the tune of two receptions for 91-yards and a 60-yard touchdown.

In that performance Johnson showed off plenty for Simmons with his willingness to block as well as his ability to create separation vertically.

Johnson has impressive length that might remind some of current Sooner freshman Charleston Rambo, though he is considerably more physically developed at the same point in time.

Though he only had two catches on the night, Johnson showed plenty with both. On the long 60-yard touchdown he ran around a defender and separated for an easy score. On the second one he made an impressive diving catch in traffic. To be fair, Johnson still showed some signs of rust and at times was clearly still getting back up to speed with the game.

Regardless of that rust, Johnson is a perimeter receiver who has a great frame, flashes speed, good hands, and still has plenty of room for growth.

*Johnson wasn't the only starring receiver on the field on Friday night as Episcopal boasted their own power five prospect in the form of Rivals100 pass-catcher Jaylen Waddle. Who in front of not only Simmons but assistants from Alabama and Florida State. Waddle had a huge night with a pair of touchdown grabs and showed off his big-time speed and is the definition of a player who seems ready to take each and every touch the distance.

*A year after graduating a pair of five star linemen in Walker Little and Marvin Wilson Episcopal seems already preparing for a big future with a pair of bookend offensive tackles in the form of Luis Chavarria and Cullen Montgomery. Both are so young and at a position that has such a huge growth curve it's hard to know just how things will pan out but Montgomery has nice length and looks likely to be an athletic tackle while Chavarria could stick at tackle or might have the frame to grow into a guard. Regardless, it's more big talent up front for Episcopal.
