The Sooner state has produced another gem for Oklahoma. Just two weeks ago, Dalton Wood, a 6-4, 255-pound athlete from McAlester (OK) High School, was in no man's land. He didn't have an offer even though his high school team has been turning heads early in the 2014 season.

There was interest from Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Tulsa and Louisville, along with a handful of smaller schools, but that changed quickly after Oklahoma tight ends coach Jay Boulware made a trip to McAlester Friday night to take in the Buffaloes 28-7 win over Durant.

"I just played a bunch of different positions and did pretty well at all of them," said Wood about what Boulware might have seen over the weekend.

"He came down and watched Friday night. I knew he was going to be there. He and OSU were there but I was really excited to see Oklahoma. That's where I always wanted to go."

It wasn't long before the Sooners knew they had to have Wood as a part of their program. Sunday afternoon, Wood got a message from the OU coaching staff on Twitter to give them a call.

Being a life-long Sooner fan, when OU coaches tell you to call, you call.

"I was talking to them and they told me they wanted me to be a Sooner," explained Wood. "I asked them what I needed to do and they just said, 'Tell us you want to commit.' I just told them. It was pretty easy.

"I was surprised at how easy it was to commit. I thought there was a lot more stuff to do and all that."

Currently Wood is doing big things as a quarterback for McAlester. But he sees his future in college at tight end.

"That's what I should be playing," he says.

Right now, Wood's family is just happy he'll be playing football at Oklahoma.

"They're happy. It's kind of weird. They just started calling me this past week," he said. "All my recruiting has been the last two weeks."

Wood's sudden fame will likely have schools flocking to McAlester to see what they might have missed out on. But the newest state star says he'll be sticking with his dream school.

"I'm committed to them," he said. "That's where I want to go."

Even if OU coaches joked they might fight over him a little bit once he arrives in Norman.

"They said they're going to put me at tight end but the defensive line coach might end up stealing me," Wood said.
