Pettaway commits to Sooners

Oklahoma has had a couple of major defensive commitments in the last week, and now it’s time for the offense to get involved, too.

That happened in a major way with Houston Langham Creek wide receiver Jaquaize Pettaway announcing his commitment to the Sooners on Wednesday.

Pettaway was down to a good old fashioned Red River Rivalry showdown between OU and Texas, with the Sooners coming out on top.

The Sooners had made their presence known with Pettaway during the spring, but everything changed following his visit for the ChampU Family BBQ event last month.

OU surged ahead in his recruitment, but there was still the Texas official visit for OU to overcome. It was a good visit, but the feeling coming after it was that Brent Venables and company were still in a great position.

Pettaway is another example of how even though Venables has earned his reputation as a defensive genius, he knows offense is certainly a key part to everything.

And guys like offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby and wide receivers coach Cale Gundy are going to make sure there is no drop in talent and quality at the skill spots.

Pettaway becomes the second receiver commitment in the last month, joining Tallahassee (Fla.) Rickards’ Keyon Brown, who made his announcement just days after earning the offer at OU’s camp.

The Sooners are now up to 11 commitments for the 2023 class, and they’re not slowing down. Two this week, and another massive announcement coming Friday from top-tier offensive tackle Cayden Green.

OU bided its time as other schools made their push in recent weeks. But Pettaway is another example that there are zero concerns about Venables or the Sooners being left behind.
