Sooners Recruiting Reset

So massive was Oklahoma's recruiting run from mid-July that the dead period of, roughly, the last two weeks felt more like a pause than a full stop to the Sooners 2018, 2019, and even 2020 recruiting efforts. With so many changes at hand it seems a perfect time to see just where the soon to be senior class stands with the Sooners and where the final scholarship places could be allotted.

Obviously Oklahoma is done at quarterback and debatably so at running back and defensive back - each for different reasons.

Running Back

Oklahoma's running back recruiting, if all stands to the plan, is a done deal. However with T.J. Pledger taking a recent visit to Nebraska and some talk of taking some officials this fall it's hard to put the gossip to bed. Again though, as long as the Sooners can keep Pledger and Tavion Thomas in the class, then this group is done and is as it will look come National Signing Day - February 7, 2018.

Wide Receiver

At receiver the run in late July that was, in order, Kundarrius Taylor, Treveon Johnson, and Jaylon Robinson has led to, in all likelihood, just one remaining spot at the position in the class. That spot seems likely to be filled either by Jaquayln Crawford or fellow speedy Texan Bryson Jackson. Crawford seems to be at the head of the line with a decision seeming imminent after speaking with him just over a week ago. If a decision doesn't come quickly from Crawford things could quickly heat up with Jackson.

Offensive Line

Oklahoma already holds one of the gems of it's class in Rivals100 offensive tackle Brey Walker as well as four-star junior college guard Tramonda Moore. Now the Sooners seem to be eyeing one more interior blocker, likely a prep standout like Curtis Dunlap or Tank Jenkins, as well as two more tackles. Those tackles are still a bit of a question but there does seem to be a clear focus on Darrell Simpson and soon to be deciding junior college standout Anthony McKinney.

Defensive Line

Oklahoma has built their current defensive line class from within state lines with pledges from Tulsa Union's Jordan Kelley and Putnam City's Ron Tatum. For the remainder of the class it looks as though Oklahoma would like to land one more player for each role. At defensive tackle there is some question of whether that player will come from the prep or junior college ranks but at defensive end there can be little doubt that Oklahoma's short wish list has Ronnie Perkins and Bobby Brown near the top of it. And it seems that if Oklahoma found the right personnel they might be willing to stretch their numbers here.

Linebacker/EDGE

The one area of this class that is, at this point, a completely blank slate. The Sooners have no commitments and are still trying to get a clear picture of their true targets. Without question one of their focal points in recruiting, not just at the position but for the class as a whole, is Midwest City, Okla. star Jalen Redmond - who recently moved to No. 3 in the Sooner State Rankings. A couple of considerable possibilities are Brian Asamoah and DaShaun White. Meanwhile, a few other dark horses? Keep an eye on Merlin Robertson, Michael Harris, and even USC commitment Raymond Scott - who has already visited Norman this summer.

Cornerback

Technically, with three commitments already in the boat, Oklahoma has no spots remaining at cornerback. However, there is some question of just how things will play out with each player. Starrland Baldwin Jr. has been heavily connected to Texas A&M at various points - though that has cooled somewhat as of late. Meanwhile Miguel Edwards, being a Florida native will be one that the Sooners will have to sweat for the foreseeable future. Finally Oklahoma's second commitment of the 2018 class, Jordon Austin, is coming off a tough injury and is still not, as of yet, fully up to speed - are he and the Sooner still completely on the same page? If anything should happen keep an eye on Jemaurian Jones, Kalon Gervin, and Vanderbilt commitment Tre Douglas.

Safety

Safety figures to be as interesting to follow as any position in Oklahoma's 2018 class. With in-state star, and the real ringleader of the class, Patrick Fields already on board Oklahoma has been more deliberate with safety attention over the past few months. That being said the two names that keep coming up? A pair of highly-ranked Ohio State commitments, Josh Proctor and Jaiden Woodbey.
