A Historic Night

CAMERON, Texas - Oklahoma four-star wide receiver commitment Jaquayln Crawford may have enjoyed a four-touchdown night but it was his team's accomplishment that he wanted to talk about following a historic 63-34 win over rival Cameron Yoe.

"It's huge, coach just told us that it's the first time we've won back to back games against Cameron since 1977," Crawford said. "It's huge for us, it's huge for our community. That bell is going to keep ringing around here for another year.

"You saw the big crowd, that isn't normal for small school football."

After what was a tight first half, Crawford and Rockdale quarterback Torry Locklin, helped combine for seven touchdowns as the Tigers downed the Yoemen for the second straight year - the first time such a streak has happened since 1977.

For the nation's No. 21 athlete the game was slow to get going but midway through the second quarter the Tigers put Crawford in as a 'Wildcat' quarterback and in just five plays went down the field to score from 40-yards out.

From there, the Tigers had a 12-7 halftime lead before scoring five third quarter touchdowns and simply outruning Yoe, and impressive wide receiver/return man Iverson Westbrook, the younger brother of former Sooners Biletnikoff winner Dede Westbrook.

On the night Crawford not only worked as a Wildcat quarterback but made a jump ball touchdown eight-yard catch as well as three touchdown runs of 20, 21, and 3-yards. As a former state track champion it's not surprise that Crawford showed plenty of speed, although Yoe, who focused heavily on Crawford all night, did a good job of keeping him from big plays.

What was surprising is that the 5-foot-10, 163-pound receiver showed some toughness and ability to break tackles as well as the expected dangerous open-field ability. Crawford still has plenty of room to fill out and his quickness was probably best on display on a second-half pass for Yoe when, in zone coverage, a receiver had found a spot behind Crawford.

The would-be touchdown was broken up thanks to Crawford closing impressively and making a play in the end zone.

NOTES:

*Locklin, a move-in from New Mexico, showed real burst for a big ball-carrier and could play any number of roles in the college game. He could fit in at receiver or could even make the move to be a safety in the college game.

*While Westbrook may not have the attention of his Rockdale counterpart Crawford, he still should be receiving plenty of attention. He, like Crawford, is a slot receiver in the college game but also shows off impressive ability in the return game, including a 65-yard kickoff return for touchdown. Westbrook didn't show the long speed of Crawford, or his older brother, but he has loads of short area quickness and is a nightmare to bring down in the open field.
