After a long offseason, we finally got the first glimpse last weekend of the new-look Sooners.

Patty Gasso's squad largely passed the test, leaving California with a 6-0 record. We saw a lot of lineup tinkering, several standout performances and some obvious growing pains as the team works to find identity and chemistry.

As the Sooners prepare for the Getterman Classic this weekend, Jesse Crittenden and Bryan Clinton discuss the Sooners' 6-0 start to the season and things to watch on Saturday and Sunday.

Which player stood out the most during opening weekend?

Bryan: I'm going to cheat and name two players. On the offensive side of the ball, it's got to be Ella Parker. She picked up right where she left off in the postseason last year, and leads the team — by a wide margin — in AVG (.591), OPS (1.634), SLG% (.955), and OB% (.679). Right now, she feels like the catalyst for the offense, and it seems like something that could become the new normal for this group. When the Sooners were on the field, Isabella Smith was the standout. She went 12.2 IP over the course of the weekend and was brilliant throughout. Right now, Smith looks like the leader in the circle for a young group.

Jesse: Parker stole the show on offense, and Smith was the star in the circle. But opening weekend was a solid start to the season for Cydney Sanders. She's second on the team in batting average (.385), slugging percentage (.692) and on-base percentage (.600), and she was responsible for one of the team's 12 home runs. She also led the team in walks with seven, picking up where she left off last season when she finished second (43). Sanders struggled offensively for most of the regular season, but walks remained the one consistency for her. If she can keep her walk rate up while providing steady production at the plate, that bodes really well for an OU offense that features a lot of newcomers.

In addition to her regular spot at first base, Sanders also notably started one game as the designated player.

The Sooners have a lot of youth this year. Which young player impressed the most, and which player should fans keep an eye on?

Bryan: Tia Milloy is going to be a superstar at the plate and in the field for the Sooners, and I think it could happen faster than many people think. Her average (.154) over the first six games isn't what she wants to see, but there's a silver lining hidden in there. Milloy had two hits on 13 at-bats—both of those hits left the yard. She's got power, instincts, and we saw what she was capable of in the field during the fall. There were a lot of new faces that impressed me on opening weekend, but Milloy is the freshman that stuck out the most.

Jesse: Keep an eye on the infield duo of Gabbie Garcia and Sydney Barker, who combined for seven starts and two home runs while seeing the most playing time among the true freshmen. But for all intents and purposes, redshirt freshman Nelly McEnroe-Marinas is essentially a first-year player and has already locked up her spot at third base. She started all six games while providing solid production at the plate (.304 batting average, seven hits, one home run).

Is it too early to gleam too much from opening weekend? What trends do you think will continue?

Bryan: Yes, but especially because of the youth that Oklahoma has right now. So many of these players just played their first weekend of college softball and are back on the practice field this week cleaning things up. If there's anything to glean from their 6-0 start is that the group still seems to have the "clutch gene" that has been synonymous with Oklahoma softball in recent years. There are tougher games ahead, no doubt, but the ability to squeeze out close wins is a trend that I think can continue.

Jesse: I wouldn't expect some of the power hitting to continue. The Sooners blasted 12 home runs through six games, with nine players hitting at least one. But the defense was again fantastic, allowing fewer than two runs per game, and that's something that can always be expected from a Gasso squad. And I believe the offense can remain potent, though it'll be interesting to see if the Sooners find ways to ramp up the aggressive base running.

Which position group or player will you be watching this weekend at the Getterman Classic?

Bryan: Honestly, the place that Oklahoma needs to improve the most is at the plate. The Sooners have one error through their first six games and held their opponents in check for the most part. However, this team struggled to make the most of their at-bats in five of the first six games. Excluding the game against Cal Baptist, the Sooners totaled 38 hits in 153 at-bats on the weekend, or a team average of .248. Their performance on Friday skews the numbers, as they went 16-for-26 (.615), bringing their actual team average to .302. It's still very early in the season, but that's 88th nationally and there are tougher challenges ahead.

Jesse: It has to be the pitching staff. There were certainly a lot of positives, like Smith's zero-hit performance against Cal Baptist and Sam Landry's 11 strikeouts against San Diego State. But it's clear there are still a lot of things to figure out with this pitching staff.

Does Landry, who allowed 14 hits in her first 15 innings, remain the leader of the group? Can Kierston Deal, who struggled a bit in the season opener but finished with a 0.62 ERA in 11.1 innings, work her way even more into the rotation? Can Smith build on her fantastic performances to start the season? How much do we see true freshman Audrey Lowry?

It'll be interesting to see how the staff performs, and how Jennifer Rocha utilizes her pitchers.
