SCOOPHD: Sooner Commits Shine

LIVE: Sooner Commits Square Off

MESQUITE, Texas - When two of Oklahoma's three most highly-rated commitments square off it's simply too good for SoonerScoop.com and SCOOPHD to miss. That's exactly how the season opened when Rivals100 members Chris Robison and Tyrese Robinson led their, respectively, Mesquite Horn and McKinney Boyd teams on the field in East Dallas.

And both did little to hurt their lofty status with Robison putting up impressive numbers going 13-18 for 214-yards and a pair of touchdowns in just one half of football.

Meanwhile Robinson helped pave the way for an offense that put over 400-yards of offense including several drives that were built on the back of Robinson and the offensive line overwhelming a smaller, athletic, Horn front.

At times in previous games where the Scoop staff had a chance to watch Robison he showed off great athleticism, great arm talent, and real toughness. However on Thursday he seemed to have taken a new step in his maturation as he was better, to be precise more patient, with his decisions. He repeatedly took check downs and shorter patterns that the defense was giving up in hopes of avoiding the big plays his offense is capable of.

Before taking a slight shoulder injury, that cost him the second half and possibly this week's matchup with Skyline, Robison threw the ball as well as one could have hoped and even made several big plays with his feet including a 42-yard touchdown.

If Robison can continue the form he showed against Boyd the nation's No. 76 overall player could be on the verge of a monstrous season for a Jaguars team loaded at the skill positions.

And while Robison gained plenty of points it's his future offensive lineman, who reportedly informed several of his own teammates to avoid any cheap shots on his future quarterback, that helped make many of Boyd's points possible.

Included in that was the first score of the game in the first half when Boyd bullied and shoved their way to a touchdown, a score that came literally behind Robinson as he opened up a lane from his right tackle position and his back Kaeden Markham popped in for the six points.

On the night Robinson was a bit up and down, at times flashing the impressive athleticism that made him such an early coup for Oklahoma's 2017 recruiting efforts. On the flip side at times he seemed to wear down, a somewhat standard trait for offensive lineman in a season opener, and would fail to run his feet and keep the low base he needed.

Any perceived shortcomings are fixable and one thing that should be noted is that Robinson's offense, though one largely predicated on the ground game, runs at a breakneck speed and as such the wearing down of the 6-foot-5, 300-pound Robinson becomes even more understandable.

It wasn't his best night but Robinson again showed the raw tools that make him one of the nation's most heavily pursued offensive guards.

NOTES:

*Though the future Sooners were the stars of the show it was another prospect who already has a connection to the program that is also worthy of discussion, 2018 Mesquite Horn jumbo athlete Maureese Wren. He had a four-yard touchdown catch from Robison in the first half and nearly got another on the final play of the first half before a scary run in with band equipment near the end zone. Fortunately he got up after a few moments and was able to play effectively in the second half. Though he stars as a receiver for the Jaguars his big frame and long arms make one think of a hback/tight end or even a 3-4 outside linebacker.

*Another Horn star on the perimeter is recent Bishop Dunne transfer Reggie Roberson who had a 56-yard touchdown to put the game away late in the fourth quarter which was just part of a huge seven reception 174-yard night for Roberson. Roberson's game is built on speed and quickness and he did all he could to cement that status.
