Smothers Has Sooner Magic?

Oklahoma's amazing July roll kept going down hill on Thursday when it landed a commitment from explosive Charlotte (N.C.) West Charlotte Rivals250 running back Daylan Smothers. He joins last month's commitment, Kalib Hicks, as the latest edition to Demarco Murray's ever-improving running back room.

SoonerScoop.com Recruiting Editor Josh McCuistion: I continue to watch Smothers' tape and can not figure out how he isn't more highly thought of by some. He may not have the top end speed that some look for but beyond that, it's hard to find much on his tape that isn't exemplary.

From offers list to rankings, there's just a lot to like about 'Hollywood's' tape.

The explosive back has great lateral quickness and shows it by burst from one cut to another and looking so smooth and easy with his acceleration. That agility and lateral movement is aided by his vision where he repeatedly shows an ability to find secondary running lanes - something that seems a natural fit for Jeff Lebby's scheme.

But for all of his talents Smothers feet may be his most elite trait. Not only can he see things quickly but his feet allow him to not only get to where he needs to go but provide some quick fakes to set up defenders. At the :32-second mark of his reel is one of the most clear embodiments of this. On the run he violently cuts multiple times in the blink of an eye to set himself up for a lengthy run.

Smothers is more powerful than one might expect and shows off ability in the passing game. In short he's a very complete back who brings a lot of interesting tools to the table.

Player Comparison: Smothers has a lot of former Texas A&M five-star signee Trey Williams in his game.
