Oklahoma had a clear goal heading into the unofficial basketball transfer season. Load up on guards to fortify the 2020-21 group.
Any uneasy feelings about where Lon Kruger’s crew was headed are now gone in back-to-back days. Former Cal State-Northridge guard Elijah Harkless announced Tuesday he has committed to the Sooners, just a day removed from OU landing another transfer guard.
Harkless, 6-foot-4 and 195 pounds, averaged 10.7 points per game with 5.8 rebounds and 2.9 assists as a sophomore. He shot 45 percent from the field and 36 percent from 3-point territory
It is expected Harkless will redshirt for OU for the upcoming season and be ready to roll as a redshirt junior in 2021-22.
OU was searching for another version of Austin Reaves, not necessarily in terms of the style of play, but in the way he’s brought to Norman.
Reaves played two years at Wichita State before sitting out 2018-19 and being eligible this last year. It would be the same story for Harkless.
Harkless had arguably his greatest game as one of his last ones, scoring 30 points with seven rebounds in helping CSU Northridge to a 72-70 road win at conference-champion UC Irvine.
And just like that, the Sooners have figured out what to do after the transfers of forward Corbin Merritt and the unexpected departure of guard Jamal Bieniemy last week.
Former North Texas guard Umoja Gibson announced his desire to transfer to OU on Monday afternoon, coming off a solid redshirt sophomore season where he averaged 14.5 points per game.
OU still has one free scholarship left, but it feels more likely that the Sooners will use that for the 2021-22 class instead of just filling it to fill it.
The spring signing period begins Wednesday, and there should be zero issues as to Gibson and Harkless signing and officially being part of the team.
