It was a near-flawless performance for Oklahoma in their first day in Waco, Texas.
The Sooners came away with a clean sweep at the Getterman Classic, improving to 8-0 in the season. They opened the day with an 8-0 run-rule victory over Hofstra before following that up with another run rule, this time in a 9-1 win over No. 23 Baylor.
The Sooners got dominant performances both offensively and in the circle, but two stood above the rest. Here's a few takeaways from the day:
Sydney Barker steals the show
The true freshman was solid in the opening game against Hofstra, going 1 for 2 at the plate with a triple and a walk. But against Baylor — the team's first ranked opponent of the season — Barker rose to the occasion.
In her first at-bat of the game, Barker put the Sooners on the board with a two-run bomb that hit off the foul pole in left field.
But she wasn't done there, as the true freshman made the best play of her young career in the fifth inning with the Sooners leading 5-1.. After Kasidi Pickering, Nelly McEnroe-Marinas and Ailana Agbayani all reached on walks to load the bases. Barker stepped to the plate and drilled a grand slam.
Barker finished the game going 2 for 3 at the plate with six RBIs. Barker also notably started both games, starting the Hofstra game at short stop and the Baylor game as the designated player. She's now started four of the Sooners' first eight games, and performances like these could help solidify her starting spot moving forward.
Ella Parker continues on hot start to the season
The sophomore left opening weekend leading the Sooners in batting average (.591), runs (10), hits (13), stolen bases (3) and on-base percentage (.679).
She picked up right where she left off. Parker opened the game against Hofstra with a two-run home run in the top of the first inning, then followed that with a solo home run in the fourth inning.
There was no slowing down against Baylor. Parker went 3 for 3 at the plate, adding a run in the third inning after she was brought in by Cydney Sander's two-run bomb.
For the day, Parker went 6 of 7 at the plate to go with four RBIs and three runs.
Sooners pitching staff gets the job done
OU coach Patty Gasso rewarded Isabella Smith with the start against Hofstra after her stellar outings last weekend. Smith pitched three innings, surrendering three hits and zero runs to go with three strikeouts.
Paytn Monticelli — who barely pitched during opening weekend — was fantastic in relief, throwing four strikeouts without allowing a walk or run in two innings as she closed out the game.
Kierston Deal earned the start against Baylor and got off to a great start, not allowing a hit through the first three innings. But after allowing back-to-back doubles in the fourth inning, which led to the Bears' lone run, and back-to-back singles in the fifth inning, she was relieved by Sam Landry. Landry forced a fly-out for the final out of the game.
